The Spirit of the Outback is a rail service run by QLD Rail between Brisbane and Longreach which includes intermediate stations such as Gympie North, Maryborough West, Bundaberg, Gladstone, Rockhampton, Emerald, Barcaldine and more!
In this video I will travel in a single sleeper cabin on the Eastbound direction from Longreach to Brisbane. I can guarantee this journey is one to consider for anyone wanting to do train travel in Australia.

Love the enthusiasm you show in your videos and once again the beautiful soundtracks you pick for those quiet moments while going through such beautiful scenery. You’re making me very jealous and think I should bring forward my trips to before I choose to retire instead of after.
In fact, it’s because of you and your videos that I’m now planning to go beyond just the Ghan and Indian Pacific for train travel in Oz (with the exception of local commuting options). Thank you. 👍🤗

Yay! My favourite non-privately owned sleeper train in Aus. Although to be fair, I haven't tried the railbed yet. So perhaps the jury is out until I do. Thanks for sharing. :)

I did this same trip last July and had a brilliant time! Flew into Longreach from Brisbane and spent the week. Longreach is an absolutely incredible place and I fell in love out there- so much so that after my trip last year I gave up work in January to take on a Master's teaching degree and hoping to get out there to teach later on! I did all the places, nerded out at the Qantas Museum (did you go, and walk on the wing of the 747?) and got a cabin back on the train to Brisbane. Met some really interesting people, including a farmer who will only get the train for medical appointments (he doesn't like flying), and the food was great! Spend a bit of time reading & chilling in the conductor's seats as well. Can't wait to do the journey again- maybe moving out there next time!

You are so lucky to have travelled on this train as it is notorious for Qld Rail to cancel this service and replace it with a coach because of "track work" I had booked 8 months in advance and one month after booking I received an sms saying my trip both ways had been cancelled and replaced with a coach. I was not happy.!!

I remember those sleeper cabins from the old Queenslander train - Brisbane to Cairns. Good to see them still in service. I'm pretty sure the cost is still heavily subsidised by the Queensland State Government. As long distance trains go it's as good as Amtrak in the US except with lockable doors. If I remember correctly the doors on Amtrak didn't lock, but still a great way to travel the USA. Also I noticed on the original Queenslander it was full of people who were actually there for the journey, which was nice as I could always find interesting people to talk to, ie travelers and fellow gunzels.
