The Chitō-ryū style (千唐流, Chitō-ryū) was founded in 1946 by Dr. Tsuyoshi Chitose. The name translates as "a school of a thousand years (千) of China (唐)", indicating the roots of the art in China's Tang Dynasty. According to Chitose himself, his teacher 新垣世璋 (Aragaki Seisho) said that the hand-to-hand art of "tode" (唐手, the former name of karate) developed in China during the Tang Dynasty and has a thousand years of history. Therefore, Chitose combined the characters "千" ("a thousand years") and "唐" ("Chinese Tang Dynasty"), calling his style "Chitō-ryū", which reflects respect for the ancient origins of the art. The master's real name is Chinen Chikanao (知念近直). He was born on October 18, 1898 in the Kumoidji district of Naha (Okinawa). Later, having moved to Japan, he took the name "Chitose Tsuyoshi" (千歳 強直) for official use - under this name he became known as the founder of the style. It is interesting that in addition to karate, Chitose also received an academic education: in 1922, he went to Tokyo to study medicine. This is why he is often called "Dr. Chitose". He later applied the knowledge he gained in the field of physiology and anatomy to martial arts, adapting traditional techniques taking into account human health and biomechanics.
