Honestly, I don't think you're imagining it 😂 As a South African, I definitely notice that we use a LOT of facial expressions and body language when we talk, especially when we're telling a story. But I wouldn't say it's specifically a woman thing. It depends more on the person and the culture/community they're from. Also, South African conversations can get very animated, and interesting very quickly 😂

What I'm realising is that a lot of our slang meanings depend heavily on context

Another thing that us South Africans say that always gets foreigners is our use of the word 'shame'. For us, it's an empathetic term rather than an expression of disgrace. So if someone tells you a sad story or about something bad that happened to them, the response from a South African will more often than not be 'Ag, shame, man." Also often followed by: "that's hectic".

Jol means to have fun, party, hang out, or enjoy yourself, depending on the context.

South Africa has 12 official languages. The country added South African Sign Language (SASL) to the constitutional list in 2023, joining the 11 spoken languages that were previously recognized

Fanakalo is also a language spoken by all men working in the gold mines in SA. This is because no one understood one another and they then developed a language understood by all in the mines. It consists of Afrikaans, English and Zulu languages. This may be the one you're looking for... 🙂
