I've been coloring and highlighting my own hair for almost 30 years, and at 61 years old, I'm still doing it myself for under $20!
When I first started, I just wanted to lighten my hair and add a few highlights without paying salon prices. Fast forward nearly three decades, and now my biggest goal is covering those stubborn gray roots while keeping the highlighted look I love.

Your hair turned out very cute! I decided to go gray 3 years ago. Being brunette and constantly chasing those gray roots was exhausting. My hair now is very champagne/white and I get compliments on the “color”. When I tell them it’s my natural color, some ladies said the cost of trying to get my color is a small fortune. I was coloring my hair every 2 weeks and it was getting expensive. I love how your turned out! Great video!

I am 80 and that is pretty much how I do my very blonde hair with highlights. Glad to see I'm not the only one who knows how to save a fortune and still look cute! I am forwarding your video to a friend of mine who pays $200 to get her hair the same color w/highlights as yours...I have been trying to talk her into doing her own hair but she said she doesn't think she can do it. Yours looks better than her $200+tip job! This is a good video, especially for women like her who are afraid to take the leap.

Hey there, new subscriber today after your video popped up!! Your hair looks AMAZING!! If I may ask, what was your natural hair color before you began coloring? I have an extremely short pixie and I colored my grey a couple time in the past, but watching your video has made me think about coloring again. I just wouldn't know what color to use. My hair used to be black, as in jet black! Any suggestions? I don't want to go super dark again, I think that ages women terribly, but I don't want it to be reddish either, as it wouldn't match my skin tone. I do this at home also, but without this kit. I just buy color (Rusk) which really lasts a long time. Then I use powdered bleach (from Sally's) and developer (also from Sally's). I saw that the developer in the kit you use is level 25. So, just for reference, if you use a higher number developer, your highlights will come out lighter (if you want that). I personally use developer 40 when I do my highlights because my hair doesn't lighten very easily. I also have to wait a week or so before doing my highlights, because if the color is too "fresh", the bleaching part has a hard getting through the color and turns orange. Nice job. Saves a lot of money.

At almost 62, i’ve been coloring my hair myself for 43 years. I started coloring because I didn’t like what I call the mousy color. I have been coloring ever since without fail. I use Revlon Colorsilk 60, dark Ash blonde. Just a few years ago, I could get it for only three dollars. Even now, on Amazon, I can get three boxes for less than $15. I don’t need the highlights because my gray and white hair act as “natural” highlights. I have saved many thousands of dollars by doing my own coloring for over four decades.

Im so happy I found your video! I am 65 and use box color for years as well. I actually had that same box in my hand at CVS for the highlights but got scared and put it back. LOL. When I have a big event to attend and there are only once in awhile I go to salon for cut, color and highlights. I just went last week and after tip it was 365.00. I just have shoulder length hair and got a trim, then roots color then partial highlights. After 3 weeks my gray roots start showing so I go out to buy my color and the highlights are then gone!. I cant afford to do this at salon every 3 to 4 weeks. Now after seeing this I am not afraid to put highlights in myself and will be going to buy iy soon! Thank you and your hair looks fantastic!

Oh my goodness you did a wonderful job! Cosmetologist here.
We call this balayage ( highlights) it means to sweep up.
If you want to soften the golden highlight purple shampoo will do the trick.
