Two of the best track and field commentators in the world

Loved watching Crammy running at his peak in the mid 80's when I was kid along with Coe and Ovett of course. A golden age for British running that's unlikelyto be repeated.

Crammy was my hero in 84 ... I was a 13 year old at Queens park Harriers and everyone wanted his signature yellow Nike kit !

I was a Hebburn Clegwell pupil and seen Steve Run around our track, Halcyon Days !!

Fantastic athlete in a Golden age of British Middle Distance running.

I got Steve crams autograph ✍️ in the early 90s at the Gateshead international cross countrythat used to be on as a live televised meet. I think I was a colt or u11 at the time. He signed the programme and still have it to this day.

Great interview and interesting to hear about the local  competitions as a youngster as our school did absolutely nothing of the sorts to develop young athletes in the early 80s! I'm now lucky to be part of an athletics club that have fantastic coaches for young people (as well as masters athletes)

He was lucky with his first year at senior school XC being one mile, ours was double that. I recall the day after we all had painful calves.

It`s usually the second and third tier runners, the good communicators with a passion for the sport, who find their calling in coaching - not world class distance runners. In that regard, Steve is a rare bird.

1986 Cram was different class.

Brendan Foster: Well, there’s a young lad in this race, Steve Cram…. Next race: Do you think Ovett can break the world record again, Brendan? Foster: ‘Steve Cram is in great forms, I think the record will go”….

Would have been interesting to hear more about 1987 and 1988, and even the 1990 Europeans. Too much to cram into half an hour. No pun intended :)

Steve Cram ran 65.33 at the World Half Marathon at Great North Run in 1992 & I finished just in front of him in 65.29 (going through 10miles in 48.50) running for Sheffield AC but in the AW results they put  the name R.Sharp (Sheff) ☹☹☹. My bit of 'glory' taken away lol.

I always believed Steve never mentally recovered from being beaten by Jose Luis Gonzales in the 1987 Europa Cup 1500m about a month before the Rome World Champtionships. Cram ran the last lap in 49.9 but Gonzales pipped him with 49.5 by a vest thickness.
Pedants argue whether it was sub-50  and miss the real point - Steve ran a competitive 1500m 49/50 last lap and lost. I remember watching this incredible race and believe he never recovered from the shock.

Ultimately a better miler and 1500m runner than either Coe or Ovette - the times are in a different league.

Very unlucky not to be an Olympic Champion - too young in 1980, half fit in 1984 and sadly almost finished as an athlete by 1988. I love than Cram makes no excuses in interviews but I think it is widely accepted that had his compartment syndrome been diagnosed in the early 80s he'd have been even better.
