This is my opinion on Mags Carter, the new playable Bravo Squad character in Gears of War: E-Day, covering her character design, her Rustlung inhaler, and player complaints that she overshadows Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago.
Gears of War: E-Day, developed by The Coalition with People Can Fly, was marketed as an origin story for Marcus and Dom, with early access opening on October 1, 2026 and the full release following on October 6, 2026. The video argues that the campaign gives more dialogue, backstory, and rewards to newcomer Mags Carter, played by Elizabeth Ludlow, than its marketing suggested. It draws on developer quotes, Steam reviews, posts on X, fan wiki lore, and the August 2026 multiplayer beta to explain why some players call the game a bait and switch. The conclusions are my personal opinion, and unconfirmed claims are identified as such.
What's covered in this video
• The intro sets out the premise that Gears of War: E-Day promised Marcus and Dom but spotlights Mags Carter.
• Mags Carter is played by Elizabeth Ludlow, known for Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and a claim on X that the face was modeled on Ludlow has not been confirmed by The Coalition or Xbox.
• The finished design includes a badly damaged eye, a set of scars, and an old chest injury that her defenders say makes her armor uncomfortable.
• The fan wiki describes Rustlung as a respiratory disease caused by long-term exposure to Imulsion fumes, which fits her job at the Timgad Prime Imulsion Refinery.
• The video argues that the lore defense does not settle the criticism, because writers chose Rustlung for her, and its listed symptoms include hair loss, eye discoloration, paranoia, and increased aggression.
• According to the fan wiki, Mags was a singer before enlisting and her inhaler is a clinical-trial prototype that never reached mass production, while one critic notes that no earlier Gears game showed an inhaler treating Rustlung.
• Brand director Nicole Fawcette said in 2024 that the old Marcus and Dom were "big beefy tanks, exaggerated in their design," and the video notes that more than 350 facial shapes go into every character.
• The video states that earlier female characters Anya, Sam, and Bernie did not draw complaints like these.
• At the Xbox Games Showcase and E-Day Direct on June 7, 2026, art director Aryan Hanbeck said, "Marcus and Dom sit in the front, Mags and Lucas sit in the back," and director Matt Searcy said the story never leaves Bravo Squad's perspective.
• Player reviews cited in the video say Mags talks more than anyone else in the squad, directs where it goes, and makes it wait while she fetches an inhaler from her apartment.
• The video rejects the theory that The Coalition hid Mags from the marketing, but cites one player's count of no lines for her in the launch trailer and one line in the Gamescom story trailer.
• In the beta that opened on August 6, 2026, Marcus repeatedly said "Great shooting, Carter," and Mags was the only Bravo Squad member to receive the Epic-tier cosmetic unlocked at player level 20.
• Mags has a detailed backstory covering fifteen years in the Pendulum Wars, the 8th Kalona Siege Grenadiers, a court-martial, and the Gut-Puncher grenade launcher, while Lucas Reyes reportedly receives almost no backstory.
• The video closes with the defense from a Steam user and Reporte Índigo that Mags is not the main character, the lack of any statement from The Coalition or Xbox as of October 5, and studio head Mike Crump's BBC comment about the next Gears game.
