It certainly had elements of woke, but overall the story was pretty good. Not to the level of the OG trilogy, but solid effort.

Arcane was a prime example of how female characters should be written. Doesn't matter if they're strong women, pretty women, or both. I never once questioned the why or how these women could do what they did, their feats of strength, or showcase their femininity. The writers of Arcane did it perfectly.

The video feels a little disingenuous, I don't understand where any old gears of war player would ever be upset over women in a Gears game. By Gears of War 2 there was a significant women demographic playing the game which is also why Gears 3 introduced playable female soldiers, like Anya, Sam, Alicia, Myrrah, and then in Judgement with Sophia, even if we jump into Gears 4 with Cait. No actual Gears of War fan ever had an issue with women in their games. Anya in the first 2 games was literally at Command giving instructions and warnings throughout the game to Marcus as well as to other characters. There were some other women in these games I can't currently recall since I'm writing this mostly from memory. The studio the Coalition most definitely has an agenda, though I'll first hand say that it's not as invasive as some other games, not that it isn't there. So why is female characters now such a problem vs back then, it's the writing and narrative of the whole game. Marcus was a highly adaptable leader who also was blatantly disrespectful towards authoritative figures he disagreed with and made himself known when it mattered, this is especially important because of where this originally stems from, his strained relationship with his father Adam Fenix another very important character in the overall story of Gears of War. Though Marcus is no doubt the leader of the squad in this game it doesn't truly feel like it, both him and Dom feel greatly watered down in order to make Mags or other characters take more of the spotlight that Marcus or Dom would have had. Marcus a good amount of the time feels like a leader in name and doesn't have that intuitiveness in combat and pushback against those higher than him that he disagreed with. When you're first introduced to Captain Grey she asks for a bunch of meaningless things for what feels like its purpose was to waste everyone's time or introduce the characters a little bit more especially if you've never played any of the other games, anyway why was Dom the only one that said something, Marcus would have absolutely said something against Grey along the lines "We don't have time for this." Maybe they can mean mug each other for a second before she moves on to whatever is next, who honestly knows. Dom was always a quick witted and joked about their situation, and while there is some of that here it's definitely not up to par and again some of the things Dom would have said instead were passed onto Mags, not to mention she even bashes Dom for talking about tomatoes and claiming the emergency they're dealing with. Why is Dom worrying about tomatoes I have no clue, apparently in the initial moments of Emergence Day Dom takes his sweet time to worry about his wife and kids. Then lets talk about Reyes, although I personally don't find him too interesting, even if I look at him as a rookie, Ben Carmine was the best rookie you could ever have.  Anyway Reyes was written to be socially awkward maybe even autistic, and there's a good amount of time Marcus, Dom, and Mags make fun of him. Marcus and Dom wouldn't have done this for the reasons presented in the game. At a certain point during the open world section of Act 2 you come across dialogue where the squad is talking about food and Mags says to Reyes something along the lines of "I'm not going to die, so you can have a warm meal." There's also multiple instances of Marcus or Dom kinda treating Reyes like shit. This game took the open world approach for some of the sections of the game and again in Act 2, where we get a MAIN mission, not a side quest, to retrieve her medicine. This if anything should have been a side quest which I honestly think for having open world segments there wasn't enough to do for how much you're running around for collectables and mods. I would have liked and probably others wouldn't have been bothered as much with this particular catering if there were some side quests in the game that's ONLY incentive was for a bit of extra lore/background on the characters of the squad. I'd place this particular mission here and make it so that her having or not having her medicine wouldn't truly affect the plot of the game. But because it is a main mission along with everything else it makes the game feel like it caters to her needs because of moments like this and basically says screw everyone else, not to say she doesn't do her own part in helping the squad in the game, but this ends of feeling like more catering to her character. You mention Marcus opening up to Mags, when Marcus along with the rest of squad worried about her cough early in the story she was quick to tell everyone to bug off, but now she is trying to get the story from everyone, sure you can say that they are becoming closer as a team but in lore Marcus would never have opened up about himself to her. What lore am I talking about? The same novel that Gears of War E-Day took inspiration from and even consulted with the novelist, Gears of War: Aspho Fields by Karen Traviss. This is where I personally start to have huge issues with the game. The novels were cannon but Coalition took that novel and basically thought to themselves they can do better and twisted it their own way. Once you start looking into the lore of the games and novels it's not that hard to see how this game doesn't fit in with anything prior to Gears of War 4, and it's particularly annoying when the characters we know aren't up to par. Gears of War was already a series that had a diverse cast, but it never did it in a way that made characters feel forced. Mags felt forced as well as some other characters for no reason. Grey herself wasn't really a problem but the way they did things with her character at times were questionable. When Marcus finally meets up with Grey to warn the COG of the Locust Horde and them hijacking COG communications, the only thing he has to say to her is "The Locust are coming" no context, didn't elaborate, just expected her to know what he was on about, her response to this was "aren't the Locust already here?" if I was in her position I would assume from what Marcus said that there was a group of enemies currently inbound to our position and to get ready to start shooting, after this the other characters elaborate on what they meant and Grey's response to this was "That's bad Bravo, that's really bad" they could have wrote this way better, Marcus and Grey could have both been drastically better here. The writing is bad, is it because of a woke agenda, I can't say for sure. Is the game trying to push what people call feminist slop, I'm not sure, but it sure does have a lot of badly written female characters in positions of power, another example being Mayor Shaw who honestly doesn't do much, not to mention we get introduced to the medic Shin only for him to die off and the Mayor screams about it and then after the fight she kinda doesn't care about it anymore. I didn't get enough time to feel the loss of characters due to the lack of time with them or connection to any of the main characters. Does this game have DEI, not sure, but again you could make the connection with Shaw, Mags, and even Sgt Major Russ who now gets the credit for putting together the chainsaw lancer instead of Adam Fenix. I'm going to leave out Captain Grey because I do think she could have been a way better character and on her own wasn't the big of a deal to be upset about. I could go on about example over example throughout the game and point out how Gears of War E-Day actively breaks the lore of the characters, how events happened, the order of events, and more, but I'd be here forever. I suggest looking more into the lore of the Gears of War games prior to 4, and looking into the novels but in particular looking into Gears of War: Aspho Fields, and another slightly relevant novel Gears of War: The Slab. And before anyone says the novels aren't important CliffyB confirmed they were cannon and Karen Traviss herself was the lead writer for Gears of War 3. This game feels like a reboot, maybe even a separate universe where things and characters are a little different, and to that I have to say you're free to like this new storyline or even the storyline going from Gears of War 4. There's a lot of aspects I liked about this game along with the other more recent Gears games, but I'm always going to see the original Gears games as the real story and Gears of War E-Day doesn't fit in it. To me and the truth is that the Coalition is to Gears of War like what 343 Industries/Halo Studios was to Halo. I hope everyone has a great day. I'd like to add that I did complete this game on insane as well as gone out of my way to collect everything and more, luckily I got the game for free through a friend, though I enjoyed parts of the game I would have largely felt like I wasted my money.

Can vouch, completed the game. There's no emphasis placed on Mags' sexuality and Captain Grey disappears from the game after like... 1-2 hours with maybe 15 minutes of actual screentime.
