5 Wargames My Viewers Wouldn’t Stop Recommending

These are the five wargames that received the most recommendations in my comments, and this list goes in five completely different directions.
We have the fast and brutal firefights of BLKOUT, medieval retinue warfare in The Barons’ War, Viking raids with Pillage, pirates fighting across land and sea in Blood & Plunder, and the detailed mechanical destruction of BattleTech.
I dug into how each game plays, what makes it stand out, where new players may struggle, and what you should know before spending money on it. We are counting down from the game with the fewest recommendations to the one my viewers mentioned more than anything else.
Which of these games have you played, and what wargame should I look into next?
Games featured:
00:36 BLKOUT
4:21 The Barons’ War
8:11 Pillage: Ransack the Middle Ages
12:10 Blood & Plunder
15:39 BattleTech

1. Even if you're planning to play Classic, the Alpha Strike box offers excellent value for money. Pick it up if you want more minis; you can print record sheets from MegaMek which is semi-officially sanctioned by CGL.
2. For your first game of CBT, I recommend (a) going with heavies or mediums, (2) setting a limit of about 15 turns, and (3) playing with Veteran pilots (3/4) instead of Regular (4/5). Going with light mechs can make you overly cautious and result in turns where you just plink away at each other from range with little effect; the same goes for assault-heavy compositions where the game can devolve into TurretTech. Likewise, the old hexmap starts players out with two nice hidey spots, one on either end, disincentivizing players from advancing. Deploying veteran pilots means the PSRs to advance into the pond in the middle are easier, making it more attractive and encouraging you to get stuck in.
Mainly we use alpha strike to speed up 20+ mechs on the table during a campaign. When you get over two lances/stars per side or have four or more players, alpha strike becomes a more appealing option.
We have been playing battletech since the early 90s so the crunchy bits are just muscle memory. But using flechsheets removes the barrier of entry and smooth out the clunky bits of having to refer too tables.
"Classic" is a better game but alpha strike has it's uses and is a great intro into the universe without having to drown someone in a spreadsheet
