Verruckt was the second map released to World at War Zombies, and is one of, if not the scariest, zombies maps ever made. In this retrospective video, I analyze how it accomplishes this.

The fact that there's a sign saying "Unattended children will be sold to the circus", soon followed by circus music playing when you turn the power on, raises SO many questions

Verruckt might be primitive in today's standards, but is genuinely one of my favorite maps to play co op. It's complete and utter chaos the entire time because of how small it is, and the team being split in the beginning adds to that chaos in a way that really makes it a one of a kind experience

To be fair the Marines' voicelines are pretty typical of trained guys in a scary situation. They know if they allow dread to seep into their minds they're screwed, keeping morale high by insulting the enemy and celebrating small victories is the best way for them to cope with their environment.

This map not only gives off a feeling of physical horror because of all the blood and the screaming, but it also almost gives off a feeling of hopelessness when you realize that you’re surrounded by nothing but forest and fog it’s almost like in the back of your mind you know no help is ever coming.

Which is probably why it’s the only map in zombies history that genuinely gave me nightmares as a kid.

Nacht is way more scary imo. At least Verruckt utilizes warm colors and familiar architecture; Nacht spawns you into some destroyed stone bunker in a landscape that doesn't even look like it takes place on our planet. Like literally, everything is fuckin grey, the fog goes on forever, and the moon is unsettlingly huge.

I remember my sister loved playing zombies with me back in the day and this and Shi No Numa were the only maps she refused to play with because they were too scary. She loved Der Riese though

I think a huge part of the horror is the fact that the map is hard as FUCK to survive on. It’s claustrophobic, maze-like, and full of spots where you’ll be easily cornered. The hopelessness is both the set dressing and also the reality, because here you won’t survive.

That beginning carnival music is probably the scariest piece of audio in cod zombies, but we also can’t forget this map introduced music Easter eggs with “lullaby of a deadman” playing after flushing the toilet 3 times.

One of the weirder things about all zombies maps but verruckt in particular that always got under my skin was the feeling of being trapped in a building you just can't get out of, even though you can clearly see the world beyond. It's so close, but you'll never be able to get to it. You can't even enter the courtyard; you're trapped in such a small space.
Kino is like this as well, where you can plainly see it's a quiet, sunny day out in the city but you're still trapped in the theater until your inevitable death. Nowhere to go, escape so close but completely unattainable.

Verrückt is definitely the most terrifying map for CoD Zombies to ever exist. It's not just you being in a locked, abandoned asylum with a bunch of zombies or being claustrophobic with the locked doors. It's about its dark history, how people with mental issues are being treated very harshly in there i mean the haunted tortured screams are already the proof of that.

Verrukt, to my knowledge, is the only map in WaW to have sprinting zombies, shown 9:27. Most runners run at the regular speed of players, but these guys consistently catch you off guard. Later maps, and games, didn't have zombies that ran at these speeds. Verrukt is unique in that way.

WaW is really something special. About the sound, the lights, the graphics that make the atmosphere of this game so unique and can't be recreate with today's raytracing nonsense

I'd say the reason the marines seem fearless is because they are probably scared shitless... And they'd joke around to keep themselves sane... Kinda like the Ultimis, Primis, and Victis crew would make jokes... It's like a comfort or try to make themselves and everyone else laugh and keep spirits high. Maybe it's a morale thing.

For me I think if the marines with their voice lines as trying to keep morale up, because what happens to them in the end is utterly terrifying.

I like that the character's are confident. I think it helps balance things out. If they we're scared too it would maker the player not want to push forward
