Hello, my dears! 🙌🌊
Today, an unusual walk through Odessa awaits you—a city with picturesque courtyards and a rich criminal past. Since the 19th century, entire families have been involved in criminal activity by the sea, and robbery skills have been passed down through generations. Furthermore, theft was taught in special schools.

For many years, Odessa was synonymous with smuggling, and in the 1990s, the city was plagued by crimes that eyewitnesses still prefer to keep quiet about.

The legendary Moldavanka neighborhood was the epicenter of crime in Odessa, and today we'll learn what exactly happened there in the past and what life is like in this neighborhood today. ⏰

I filmed a long episode about Odessa in 2021, and it's still relevant. ⚓

Odesa guide Katya Kurlap will talk about enterprising Odessans, smuggling, scams, and the city's iconic criminal authorities.

Together with Katya, we'll visit the iconic flea market near the Starokonny Market, learn how and where the sellers bring in antiques, chat with colorful Odessans, and hear shocking stories from the world of Odessa crime ⚡️

Locals will recall the scams that flourished here 30, 40, or 50 years ago and admit whether the city has cleared itself of gangsters.

Katya will explain why Odessans respected "Karabas" and tell us what mark Mishka Yaponchik and Sonya Zolotaya Ruchka left on the city's history.

We'll also stroll through Odessa's courtyards and visit Alexander Fridman, a renowned collector. He presents his "forbidden" treasures and admits to a connection with a member of the "Black Cat" gang.

Why was all the smuggling done in Odessa? Who were the "burglars"? Who sold tea with bricks and why? In this video, you'll find out everything. Shocking discoveries and footage of colorful Odessa await you. Enjoy!

⚓️ BANDIT ODESSA: CRIMINAL PERSONALITIES

👑 Mishka Yaponchik (Moishe-Yakov Volfovich Vinnitsky, 1891 - 1919) was a famous robber, the king of criminal Odessa. He kept the rich in fear, did not rob the poor, and tried to avoid bloodshed.

According to one version, he was nicknamed "Yaponchik" (Japanese for the distinctive shape of his eyes); according to another, because he told his Odessa colleagues about the lifestyle of Japanese thieves.

👠 Sonya the Golden Hand (Sofia Ivanovna Blyuvshtein, 1846-1902) was a criminal and adventurer. She used acting skills in her scams 🎭 and worked with trained animals. Sonya had a pet monkey that swallowed jewelry. The Golden Hand stole from hotels, jewelry stores, and first-class train compartments. Sonya hid stones under her long fingernails and made hiding places in the heels of her shoes.

🌶️ Karabas (Viktor Pavlovich Kulivar, 1949-1997) was a crime boss who ruled Odessa in the 1990s. Thieves in law and officials throughout the CIS obeyed him.
He received his nickname because he lived above the "Golden Key" store on Deribasovskaya Street. According to another version, it was because he manipulated people like a fairytale puppeteer.

After the collapse of the USSR, he began engaging in racketeering. Kulivar's patronage was considered a guarantee of security; he took up to 10% of a company's profits for it.

He was killed in 1997 in the courtyard of Bathhouse No. 4 in Odessa.
