Nihao, friends!
We continue to conquer the vastness of Asia and meet new heroes. This time, we'll talk about life in China. In this episode, you'll meet three characters—Yulia, Mark, and Sergey—who will tell us a wealth of interesting facts about the Celestial Empire.
▶ YULIA
Our first character is Yulia, who, after graduating from university, landed an internship in Shanghai and fell in love with the country. It's been four years since Yulia moved to China and works as a tour guide.
Yulia will show us both well-known Beijing landmarks, such as the Temple of Heaven, and the inconspicuous hutongs where the lives of native Beijingers swirl. She'll also tell us about the history of the Celestial Empire, life in China, and its unique features.
The Temple of Heaven is perhaps the most beautiful temple in Beijing and the only round temple in China, where the "son of heaven"—the Chinese emperor—in ancient times made offerings twice a year. Yulia will tell us why the same word or syllable can have multiple meanings, why the Chinese themselves don't know what their songs are about, the peculiarities of the Chinese mentality, how feng shui works, and much more.
▶ MARK
Our second hero, Mark, has been living in China for 15 years now, and for him, it's practically a second home. In 2004, he came here to work as a musician. Mark will tell us about what China was and is like now, why he initially hated the country, the eccentricities of the Chinese, and unusual facts.
For example, did you know that plastic rice is made in China? Yes, and it's often mixed into the rice cooked on the streets to reduce the cost of edible rice. WeChat is also widely used here—the Chinese live their lives on this app. Why do they crack sunflower seeds at weddings in China, how homeless people raise money through WeChat, why it was impossible to breathe normally here in 2004, what you need to move to China – Mark told me a ton of amazing stories, I'm sure you'll appreciate them!
▶ SERGEY
The third guest, Sergey, is from Kyiv and has lived and worked in China for 12 years. We'll take a stroll with Sergey through the Yabaolu district, a neighborhood with a large population of Russian-speaking Chinese, and Russian-speaking people in general. Sergey will talk about how the Chinese save money, how buying a car in China and why it's not easy, how the Chinese are changing, what surprised him about this country 12 years ago and what still surprises him today – find out in the video.
Be sure to tell me in the comments what you think of this video and participate in the contest! Now, let's go watch.
