YOU asked for it. YOU knew it was coming. YOU knew the suffering I would endure... The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall released in 1996; well before I was born. In this video I try both the Classic 1996 edition along with the GOG Unity Cut and provide my first impressions of this abomination of a video game. Enjoy my gentle fall into insanity.

When you saw a classic PC text menu screen and thought you were being hacked, I instantly aged twenty years.

Skeletons in Daggerfall: they blink and you die

Daggerfall has a lore-accurate, non-condensed map size and scale, meaning the total area of the map is about 209331 square kilometres and has a population of about 750000. The travel time listed when you fast travel is the time it takes your character to walk to the selected destination.

the tutorial is rudimentary because this game was made back when you were expected to read dozens of pages of player manual to play rpgs. so while Unity changes some things from the original, never go in blind on an old rpg

@ronnychristenjoyer6778 1 year ago

The tutorial in this game is not meant to introduce you to the mechanics. It is designed to break you. If you can get through it, it means you are worthy to play the game.

Daggerfall has a 97 page manual that you really have to read to fully understand this game. That was par for the course for most computer RPG's back then. There's a LOT of mechanics and story stuff in there that you need to know. It's near impossible to just, "Jump into Daggerfall" and know what you're doing or what's going on in the world without reading that manual.

"Am I playing Dungeons and Dragons?"
Yeah, kinda lol. Basically every RPG until 2000 was a DnD clone. The first 2 Elder Scrolls are straight DnD rips, based directly on a campaign the developers were playing.

In kind of an insult to injury, you are forced to look at every single bandit's taint for daring to win fights against them.

1:20 Yes, Daggerfall is a slightly tweaked real-time version of AD&D. This was quite common for CRPGs of the era, which were mostly trying to literally be D&D with the computer playing the role of DM.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who can't believe people actually played the DOS version. How spoiled we are.

By the way, the guy on the right is Chancellor Ocato, the elf you bring Martin Septim to at the end of Oblivion. Way more imposing in Daggerfall.

Sharp as knife, sharpest knight, darkest knight, dark knight, knight fall protocol, knife fall, daggerfall, it’s all coming together. You’re Argonian Batman.

"This is the easy mode, this is the easy mode btw."

I laughed so hard at this, okay? Dude, I played Daggerfall with Unity—it gives the game some updates so it doesn’t feel that dated. It’s still super challenging, but it’s a much better experience... Especially for your eyes. If you plan to keep playing, I definitely recommend it, even just to use better resolutions. :)

Yeah, the tutorial dungeon is notorious for breaking people.
Here are some tips:
1. The GoG Unity Version is heavily outdated, it's better to download and mod it manually
2. Some classes cannot equip certain items because of their material, like leather for example
3. You can ask people for quests in the dialog box. There is a big button that says work
4. You will recieve a letter that lets you continue the main quest. It's actually quite interesting storywise
5. You can create your own class by choosing the Custom class during character creation
6. The skeletons aren't actually that tanky, you just had a low hit-chance, because of your skills and stats.

Daggerfall is quite difficult at the beginning, but once you figure out how things work it's a lot of fun.
Also probably a good thing that you played the DOS Version first incase you ever want to play Arena or Battlespire, because they have the same insane controls (Yes, I still have PTSD from my 36 hour Arena playthrough lol)

Genuine advice: You have to read the manual, dude. Older games generally have very unhelpful tutorials, and really expect you to read the manual before/while playing.
