Not to even get into the more nefarious bookkeeping aspect of it. Is the literally millions of dollars gathered under the billing of us label as "gratuities" entered into the accounting as revenue ? It is essentially a part of the staff wage structure and no doubt a line item for the bean counters BUT if as "gratuities" it is not technically considered revenue, it evades taxes paid by the establishment AND it shows that the cruise line in this case is making LESS money than it actually IS which would reflect on the stock prices and the worth of the company. In criminal circles this would be worthy of RICO charges. It would also have an impact on any pension or benefits linked to wages that the staff get because their on the books wages are considerably less than the wage with under the table gratuities. Never mind all of the side effects of if you are perceived as a "cheap tipper" you get less than the service that you have paid for.
There is SO MUCH wrong with this whole set up that mostly Americans take for granted that it leaves a bad taste in your mouth. AND, and by the way, I have been in catering as a chef my whole 50 + years of working so I am not some elitist who rants. In my Private catering that I ran for several years, I actually refused tips as I told my clients, "I do my best for you under the deal we made from the start" , anything less than my best was disingenuous and tantamount to stealing. You paid, I failed to deliver if I do not do my best.
Have at it folks, I'm heartless, don't understand their situation etc etc but each and everyone of us perpetrates the corrupt system and just to be PERFECTLY CLEAR , my biggest problem is with the cruise lines treating staff like organ grinder's monkeys and scamming us with "included gratuities" fully expecting us to pay more. The staff are generally speaking great and work hard, They deserve a FAIR WAGE up front
