I am within a few days of my 80th birthday and suffering from terminal bone cancer. I shall die quite soon, and, as a a believer, the words of the hymn "Abide With Me" are a great comfort and solace.
My father was only 3 when his father died at 27 from a cerebral hemorrhage. My grandmother, a 23-year-old widow with 2 small children, asked for "Abide with Me" to be sung at his funeral. She died at 102½, and it was one of the last hymns she sang.
As a documentary producer myself, I love that your style of video doesn't try to emulate to rapid editing style too often found in many videos. Thank you that you don't bow to the tick toc style of holding a lav microphone in your hand (a personal nuisance). I find your video here a breath of fresh air. We all just need to pause, take time to breathe and rest. I can't remember the last time I saw a video that does this so simply and elegantly.
Joni Erickson Tada once told a story about this hymn. After the terrible accident which left her completely paralyzed, she was trying to go to sleep at night and started to cry, She felt all alone and despairing and helpless. She couldn't even turn her head for the tears to roll off her face. But as the child of a Christian family who had taught her hymns, she remembered 'Abide With Me'. She started to sing it in the dark, and was reminded, and knew God was still with her and she was not alone. She was comforted by the Lord through the song.
This hymn I feel is like prayer It our souls longing for Jesus to abide with us. I feel this in my very soul. I'm 67 years old with 5 masses in my right lung. I need his presence more than ever and I earnestly pray for his abiding with to the end. I pray God will give my children and my loved one's the same. May jesus abide with them when I am home abiding with my lord and savior for ever and ever.
Born and raised in wet, grimy, Manchester 80 years ago I am now fortunate enough to live in Dorset. There are many of these these small , remote, churches scattered around. Having travelled all over the world , for me ,they are the most magical places. You can keep your machu pichus etc. Nowhere is more awe inspiring. This young English man and his love and passion for his music is the perfect compliment to their beauty.
How great to see a young person appreciating classical church music. What an organist! My husband was an organist and loved all hymns and worship songs old and new
Abide With Me, Fast Falls the Eventide is a hymn that has been important to me since the early 1970's. I grew up in Skokie, Illinois, very close to Chicago, in the USA. I knew this hymn from The Lutheran Hymnal (Concordia Publishing House, Saint Louis, Missouri) and subsequent Lutheran hymnals. At my paternal grandmother's funeral, my wife and I sang this hymn as a duet. I've known the bass line for most of my life. My wife passed away in 2022 from cancer. This hymn has been very significant in my life. Thank you.
When I was a child, and the country still retained something of its Christianity in more of the people's hearts, there was nothing more moving than hearing a crowd of 70,000 or so sing Abide With Me at the football cup final at Wembley Stadium. In time, as this practice faded, my memory of this has become ever more moving, as I realised that the men who sang that had probably been in WW2, or even WW1 if they were grandfathers, so that this declaration of being together, in brotherhood, with God, was simultaneously a meaningful hymn to the brotherhood shared with those who had not survived to be there with them. It expressed I think, some grief. My own generation, who had not experienced such loss, allowed the practice to fade. The culture begs for the return of such gatherings.
I don't often comment after one of your outstanding videos, but that doesn't mean I don't DEEPLY appreciate ALL that you do! I often feel such a personal connection to the music you play and the stories you bring! Keep doing what you do -- I know I am only one of thousands who love hearing from you each week!
This was one of my Mum's favourite hymns when she died, aged 98, in 2021 the covid rules were still in force and hymns were banned. Only myself, my husband, the minister and the funeral directors were in attendance. This reminds me of the funeral she could never properly be given. She died peacefully, not of covid, thanks be to God.
