Welcome back to Five Colors of Travel. In today’s video, we explore Dariba Kalan in Chandni Chowk, Delhi, one of the city’s most historic and fascinating markets. Known for its silver jewellery, artificial bridal jewellery, traditional attar, perfumes, gemstones, crystals, trophies, medals and unique decorative items, Dariba Kalan has something interesting around almost every corner.
Dariba Kalan is located in the main lane ahead of the Gurudwara in Chandni Chowk and can be identified by the Welcome to Dariba Kalan entrance board. The market generally becomes active around 11:30 AM and remains open until around 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM. If you are planning to shop here, it is better to visit after late morning as many shops open a little later.
At the entrance, you can also find the famous Old Famous Jalebi Wala, a popular place for hot jalebis and crispy samosas before exploring the market.
One of the interesting sections of Dariba Kalan is its custom trophy and medal shops. We came across third-generation craftsmen who have been making trophies and awards since before Independence. The market also has a connection with military honours, including custom trophies inspired by the Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw pattern commissioned during the tenure of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Trophies and mementos are available at different price points, with smaller pieces starting from around ₹40 and ₹45. Metal trophies can be found for around ₹125, ₹150 and ₹250, while acrylic and wooden shields can also be customised according to your requirements.
Dariba Kalan is also known for gemstones, crystals and traditional silver artefacts. You can find shankhs, rashi ke nag, pearl garlands and crystal figurines such as turtles, owls and elephants. The market also has beautifully crafted silver-plated chariots, elephants, traditional swan-shaped spoon sets and silver puja thalis.
Another major attraction here is the historic attar and perfume market. Natural attars and fragrances are available in varieties such as rose, sandalwood, saffron and Oud, along with several designer blends. Prices can start from around ₹300 and go up to ₹30,000 to ₹40,000 or more for premium pure rose and Oud extracts.
Gulab Singh Johri Mal is one of the most well-known names in Dariba Kalan and is famous for its traditional attars, essential oils and aromatic incense sticks.
While exploring the market, you can also stop for local food. Subhash Chaat Wala is known for pav bhaji and aloo tikki, while local stalls around the market serve freshly prepared kachoris.
For jewellery shopping, Gali Pyao Wali is another interesting section. You can find fancy earrings starting from around ₹100, while artificial bridal and non-bridal jewellery sets are available in a wide range of designs. Brass and American Diamond sets can start from around ₹3,000, while exclusive bridal sets can range from ₹10,000 to ₹25,000. Custom silver jewellery can also be ordered.
Dariba Kalan is a great place to explore if you are looking for traditional jewellery, attar, perfumes, silver articles, bridal accessories, trophies, decorative pieces and unique shopping finds in Old Delhi.
