In today's video i have released the long asked for review of the Luban #62 Low Angle Jack Plane. So I recommend you watch this video before deciding to buy one or not. Hint: I'm impressed with its quality!

Note: Luban is also available under the name Qiangsheng and also Wood River, the later has had a few changes minor changes but is still the same plane despite what some say.

Hope you enjoy!!

Hey Luke, thanks for going above & beyond to include your commentary on potential use of this low angle plane with a shooting board that I had asked for, it's greatly appreciated!

Melbourne tool company should be getting you to do their reviews mate. This is comprehensive and informative. Love ya work

Superb video. Painstaking detail. You clearly know your stuff. I have been working my way through your catalogue since stumbling on your video about dovetail joinery. Many thanks.

You should do reviews for timbecon! Very informative.

I am even more convinced the MTC gear comes out of the Luban factory. Very very similar.

I've had and used the same plane for about 5 years. I've found the wooden knob loosens/unscrews and leave the front plate locked. To fix/address this I glued some 80 grit paper to the bade of the knob. This grips the brass and has greatly reduced the number of times it has slipped.

The sides don'y have to be exactly square to the sole because lateral adjustment makes the blade square to the wings (sides) when shooting. As long as the sides are near to square (89, 88, 87, 86 degrees or whatever) , that's good enough as long as the plane has enough lateral adjustment to correct it. People get hung up on the sides being square but it's something that can be expected to be out of square, so adjust and just get on with life. 🙂

Wouldn't a dry graphite lube be good so it won't run down on the wood?

Where do you purchase the Lubans? Thanks for the video.

As a side note, on my new Stanley Sweetheart 62, the insert that adjusts the blade depth requires attention. Rather than 2 holes the piece that fits into the bed and the piece that fits into the blade are both threaded and are positioned independently. If they are not positioned correctly the blade either never protrudes or never retracts. But it sure lets you adjust precisely for blade wear.

I recently received my Luban and it came out of the box with a laterally tilted bed. There’s not enough movement using the norris adjuster to compensate for the blade angle. Even at max im still gouging on one side. Just wanted to put that out there cause i definitely went into the purchase thinking the Luban was gonna be great. It does feel quality but this is a fatal flaw. Ill be asking for a replacement and hopefully that one has better machining. Hopefully if ur looking to get one then you dont get one of the dodgy ones.

What a great review. Thank you.

If you have a video on that shooting board ( not sure how I could have missed it if you do :) would you please post a link for me. I'm trying to figure out what that piece of wood that is screwed down on the edge is for.

Luban no.62 is a hunk of shit, i literally picked it from your review compared to MTC, the sole wasn’t flat, the side where not 90 degrees to the iron, the matting bed was on an angle causing a skewed left side shave. I spent 2 days cursing and thinking I’m the problem, and after figuring it out I couldn’t find a way to talk to Luban, so definitely don’t trust them enough to buy another plane by them.
