Three friends invite a socially awkward stranger, Alex, on a camping trip. It starts as an awkward, tense weekend and turns terrifying as Alex obsessively films them, lurks in the shadows, and slowly turns violent. Captured entirely through his handheld camcorder, the film is a creeping found-footage horror that builds tension through obsession, paranoia, and the fear of being watched.

I used to hate found footage films until i watched this little horror movie called creep it’s so good.

If you want to make a Hollywood looking found footage movie: Shoot in 24p (24fps but specifically 24p), shoot in 1/48 shutter (Most found footage is shot in 1/48, or 1/60), and make the footage a bit darker

I'm a big found footage fan also. One thing, I dont necessarily think found footage is relegated to footage that is lost then found later anymore. A lot of the latest ff movies that I like are presented as Livestreams as if you just tuned into them or documentary style tv shows like What We Do in the Shadows or Spree. To me found footage is more generalized as self shot or in first person movies.

This was so damn helpful. I am making a found footage horror for my final project for uni and this gave me some great advice. Thanks! :)

Three of the most often recurring formulaic annoyances I find with nearly every found footage horror flick I've seen are...

1) The villain or evil thing always triumphs. Always.

2) The monumentally lame tactic of having the camera and/or any electronics within the scene become inexplicably glitchy - as in 'jump scare' LOUD glitchy -  the moment the villain or creature or supernatural entity makes itself present. One would think that eventually the people who decide to make one of these movies would stop and say, ya know, everybody and their brother DOES THE EXACT SAME THING with the dumb, overused 'glitchy' camera bit... so let's NOT do that! ha ...but no, it NEVER doesn't occur. Guess what? It's NOT scary, only stupid.

3) The other aspect of these type of movies that is highly annoying is, because there typically isn't much of a story or real character development involved, having the idiotic characters incessantly arguing and yelling at one another throughout the entire movie is used as a shoddy, ham-fisted attempt to establish a semblance of drama and suspense (or just to pad the movie out) The problem is, this recurring tactic doesn't create tension... it's like hearing someone's car alarm going off, and all you want it to do is STOP.

IMO I think what makes a good found footage good is a antagonist but not what it looks like but what its doing to the main characters not just only physically but mentally, emotionally, and even spiritually does it make it more interesting if there's a physical monster chasing them and killing them like any old slasher film or does it make it better by having the monster tear the group apart themselves and make us wonder if there ever was a monster to even begin with. There is more concepts of course but you get what im saying just don't make a antagonist that not only hurts them outside but also inside as well.

The viewfinder gag in FF drives me bonkers.  This is an excellent set of rules/guidelines.

I love found footage. And I. Your first point I really agree with you. It seems like newer found footage films feel like it's okay to disregard the form and ad cameras where they couldn't be a camera and that really bothers me. I really liked Late night with the Devil until the end. Like they set up this lost episode aesthetic and then for the last 15 minutes they abandoned everything that came before. Really pulled me out.
