Walk Like Alice

In this video, I walk you through two Lightroom edits featuring one of my photos and one of Sarah’s. I show you how my approach to editing changes between our two styles and I share a Lightroom technique I wish I had discovered sooner, and how it’s completely changed the way I edit.

The preset curves adjustment layer tip is one of the best LR tips I've seen a while. Thanks.

@OleODK 1 year ago

Wow - the tip on creating "adjustment layers" using the mask is new to me. That might save even more trips into photoshop.

Your relaxed use of brushes was pretty inspiring to me. I use masks exclusively because they're programmatic and accurate, i.e. "correct" and usually end up with 10-20 tiny masks all over the image in a very rigid edit. Watching you paint your edits, I initially cringed and imagined bad edges, but your results do look great. If anything, the process seems much more pleasant and natural. Thanks for dissuading my fears, I will try your method.

Another great video. Never too old to learn and ....well, I've been inspired by your photography since the wedding days. Thank you again!

Jeff, I’ve no idea how you find the time to create such spiffy and useful vids. Thank you!

@rjmachin 1 year ago

One of the most useful and inspiring clips I’ve watched for a long time. Thanks!

Amazing technique, a really nice result!

Your narration complements the techniques perfectly. I usually watch the editing videos more than once. Learning all the time. Thanks for doing these.

I have so much to learn when it comes to editing. Thanks for the walk through on your methods. All the best.

Brilliant use of the brush to keep everything looking natural. And the luminance mask at the end! Gonna bring these tips into my editing now too!

Excellent tutorial, Jeff! I really appreciate your explanations and going back and forth to see what effect the edits have had on the image. Subtle, but significant, tweaks make a real difference to how well the photo works. Thanks!!

Jeff, this is a wonderful tutorial and a very intuitive way to work.I especially like how you are crafting the vignette and the loose masking that you are painting in to bring down the highlights and to lighten areas too. Bravo!

Great video, you've given me a lot to think about :)

Love this step-by-step! I really struggle with getting 'pop' in my B&Ws. This was very helpful!

Excellent approach to editing. I learned a couple of things here - thank you.

Liked the Winogrand tilt. Cropping from the left seems appropriate.

This is a brilliant video. I appreciate your commentary and explanation.

Your skill in editing really starts from knowing what to edit, and how. This is what I struggle with, but I am learning through you.

What appears to be very subtle edits, like the ice cream, or the highlights on the kids nose, really comes together to create a fantastic edit.

Thanks.

Thanks Jeff, I've always used masks and spent ages fiddling about with them, using the brushes is a real time saver and enhances an image in a way that a mask never could, I'll definitely be adding this to my workflow. I bought your Silverchrome presets a while back and love the quality they bring, thanks again Jeff!
