In April 15, 1945. British soldiers entered Bergen-Belsen and found a camp overwhelmed by starvation, disease, forced labor and death. Among the captured camp personnel was a young German woman who was only twenty-one years old: Irma Grese. Within months, she would stand before a British military tribunal while survivors described what they said she had done at Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen.
Grese's story is surrounded by some of the most disturbing reputations attached to the Nazi concentration-camp system. Survivors described beatings and violence, while Grese admitted to using a whip, beating prisoners, and allowing other female guards to beat prisoners without authorization. She also acknowledged participating in selection procedures, although she denied deciding who would live or die and denied some of the most serious allegations, including shooting prisoners. The documentary separates what was admitted, what witnesses testified, and what remained disputed.
This documentary follows Irma Grese from her early life and entry into the concentration-camp system at Ravensbrück, through Auschwitz-Birkenau and Bergen-Belsen, to the Belsen Trial and her execution at Hamelin Prison on December 13, 1945. But this is not simply the story of a notorious young guard. It is an examination of individual responsibility inside a system built on persecution and mass murder—and a reminder that behind the names of perpetrators were tens of thousands of victims whose identities, families and futures were deliberately destroyed.
