Clean the whole grill would have been the first step glad I take pride in my grill cleaning

Great job. If you take it apart, do a through cleaning with the hose, some degreaser and heavy duty stainless pad. Especially on the grease pans or they will rust out. I strongly recommend giving your grill a great cleaning at least once a year. The outside comes out really nice with some Bar keepers Friend and a scotch pad.

Replacing the igniter would have been the cheapest part of this. Don't know if you said anything as to why you didn't do it, but those things can last a good while. Anyways, nice job.

why didn't you replace the ignitor (super cheap and easy) at the same time? Don't turn both burners on to light it, light the bottom first and once it is lit turn the top one on (less chance of burned off eyebrows!).
