This Disaster Documentary tells the true story of the 2015 Shoreham Airshow disaster, when a vintage Hawker Hunter crashed onto the busy A27 in West Sussex, killing eleven men who were outside the airshow grounds. Through detailed storytelling, eyewitness accounts and the history behind the aircraft and display, we examine what went wrong, the lives that were lost and how the tragedy changed British airshows forever.

Welcome to Disasters Uncovered, a disaster documentary channel dedicated to powerful storytelling and in-depth exploration of some of history’s most devastating and/or forgotten tragedies.

I was a traffic police officer on duty that day. I arrived on scene about ten minutes after the crash happened. The scene was absolutely horrendous. Retired last year after 30 years service but can still picture what I saw that day.

Thank you for honoring the victims of this horrible tragedy. Instead of just listing the names, you gave them faces as well. You gave us a small glimpse into their lives.

Thank you

I was there on the day and remember saying to one of my friends that the Hawker Hunter was being flown past the crowd very low and that, I thought, the pilot was “showboating”! It’s absolutely outrageous that people have gone to prison for posting on social media but Hill escaped going to prison!

@dennismuchmore8169 1 month ago

This pilot flew over my town seconds before the crash.
Having lived here for years we have never had a plane fly so low and fast.
The house shook and the noise was deafening.

I was 14 years old when I witnessed this tragedy in person, I was half a mile away in a field with my family, to grow up with the news of this and to see the pilot essentially walk away with murder truly makes my blood boil. I want justice for those affected, and I want the pilot to rot in a cell until he’s nothing but bones and ash.

@shukulaszuma 1 month ago

He killed 11 people and walked away a free man. Just amazing and perplexing. That's justice for you.

@Woodman-Spare-that-tree 1 month ago

Hill can’t have it both ways. He can’t say, “I’m the kind of person whose judgement is affected by mild G-forces”. AND. “I want my pilot’s licence back.”

I used to watch the air displays at RAF Fairford from Rhymes Farm, a popular and legal public viewing spot right by the runway. After the 2015 Shoreham Airshow crash that killed 11 people, that option disappeared and the field was no longer opened to the public. The AAIB and CAA both highlighted the danger posed by people gathering in uncontrolled locations near display flight paths, exactly the kind of informal runway-adjacent viewing that Rhymes Farm provided.
The AAIB found the Hawker Hunter crash was caused by pilot error, the aircraft entered a loop too low and too slowly, and an escape manoeuvre was not carried out.
Andy Hill had his pilot licences suspended by the CAA right after the 2015 crash after such dangerous flying. Despite the findings and the lasting impact on the victims’ families, he later tried to have his pilot’s licence restored and pursued further challenges after it was revoked. Those efforts have failed to this day. Thankfully.
It is hard to understand the mind of someone involved in such a preventable tragedy and had killed so many innocent people, would continue seeking a return to flying.

I was there that day, I remember seeing the plane get lower and lower and it went behind a tent. I was just about to make a comment on how low the plane had gotten when I saw flames and smoke come up from behind the tent. A moment I will never be able to forget and definitely ruined some of 10 year old me's innocence. RIP the the 11 lost that day 💚

I live in Brighton and am a volunteer in a local Primary School. I help children with their reading. The father of one of my pupils was among those killed in this disaster

Me and my dad were in the crowd that day. Couldn’t believe what happened. Fair play the fire brigade roared down the runway 30 seconds after the crash and the organisers kept control. Couldn’t believe the pilot survived when we heard, the crash looked like a scene out of a war film. Bloody cheek of the pilot trying to get his licence back. Should never even think about getting in a cockpit again

He got away with killing 11 innocent people

i remember this day vividly! i was traveling home from Hastings that day and was stuck in traffic at the very spot 10 mins before it happened!
i got home jumped out the car and was walking over the bridge by lancing train station to meet up with the wife when we saw the smoke rise up.

RIP to all those that lost their lives that day, and the emergency services that had to witness the aftermath!

Its a miracle the pilot survived, but Mr Hill should be behind bars, he had a history of deviating from agreed flight/display plans and performing risky manoeuvres.
"His ego was writing cheques that his skill couldn't cash" as a result innocent people paid with their lives :(

I would like to, one day, see Shoreham Airshow resume but take place over the sea (like Bournemouth and Eastbourne), i doubt it will ever happen now as its been shut for so long

An arrogant pilot grandstanding and never paid for all those mes lives and had the bare face’s arrogance to apply for his license back… what shame the families didn’t take him to court for compensation

I was there on the day with my wife of the time. I worked in ATC with the RAF in the early nineties in my previous career at RAF Coningsby and had seen countless air display practices. As Hill came out the top of the loop and started his descent I step in front on Tracey and turned her away from watching telling her .. "Don't look".

I was at Biggin Hill in 2001 and saw both the crash of the vampire and the P-63 the following day. Both again were preventable . This guy never admitted responsibility for what he did and from what I remember he had history of episodes like this prior to Shoreham . If he’d held his hand up and shown remorse from day one then maybe that would’ve done him more favours , but he hasn’t. And that speaks volumes. RIP to the victims and to all who have died at airshows as a result of crashes

Went down just behind my house, was in front garden filming it, saw the full loop then engine sound instantly stopped and the ground shook, will never forget that feeling, it was then deadly silent as if someone had turned the sound off until I could hear the numerous emergency vehicles on route.

@Ninjahat 1 month ago

It doesn't take much knowledge about aircraft to see and know that Hill didn't perform the loop at high enough altitude. He was too low to perform a loop. The disaster startet already at the very beginning of the loop. Hill is directly responsible for all those deaths and the loss of the aircraft for sure.

I live close by and used to watch the show from my garden, with many passing directly over my roof. I decided to go to the show that year and had walked along the A27, past the future crash area, and into the airport. I was full of adrenalin as the show started and it amazed goers, as usual.
Then the Hunter appeared and did a few manoeuvres, then went off east over Shoreham. Whilst we all waited for its return, with cameras ready, then suddenly, tragedy and two huge plumes of thick dark smoke appeared. The field fell silent after a few gasps. We stood, just looking, not knowing what had really happened. Several comments like, the pilot could not survive that, were heard. No one knew how wrong that was and how much worse it really was. Eventually, we were all ushered out to the south of the airport, still in a sombre mood. I would only learn later when I got home, the extent of the disaster.
I also remember for some time afterwards that drivers would slow down near the intersection, as a mark of respect to the 11.
