Dog holes do much more than just hold material down. With accurately machined holes and dogs, the entire table becomes a repeatable reference system. I can locate, square, and reposition material across the table with sub-millimeter repeatability, set up stops and fixtures, and return parts to known positions without re-measuring everything.
They also support operations that vacuum doesn’t really address, like track-saw alignment and squaring, physical stops, jigs, clamps, and locating oddly shaped or porous material that may not hold vacuum well.
Vacuum is excellent when you want unobstructed surface access and fast sheet or panel hold-down. Dog holes are excellent for location, alignment, squaring, fixturing, and mechanical workholding.
To me, vacuum would be a great addition to a dog-hole table—not a replacement for it.
