So thought I'd post a comment for responses... And felt it sensible to add that if you just pick "no because of <select: Torpedoes/Hypersonics/Wonder Weapon of the Week" as your comment, without explaining how those systems would over come the counter for them outlined in the video, I will presume you haven't watched the video and therefore not bother to respond - as the response is already in the video. If you do however, then I will of course reply in an upcoming scuttlebutt: I'm literally doing this because otherwise all I would be doing as comment response is going "it's in the video" which would just feel rude for me to keep responding in such a way, even though it would be truthful.

Hope you all enjoy and find this as thought provoking to watch as I did to make. yours sincerely, Alex

it's hilarious to me that this was recommended to me now.

Large navies have design bureaus and they need something to do the pass the time. As such it would not surprise me to find out there are various plans for battleships already out there, being regularly updated, and available for just in case. The same can be said about armies and war plans.

This popped into my recommendations... for some reason.

Sold. I'll take 12.

One of my favorite “modern” battleship designs came from the 1960’s spy spoof TV show “Get Smart.”  There was a multi-part episode where Max and 99 were trying to recover the plans for the “Nuclear Amphibian Battleship.”  This very concept makes me giggle.

I think realistically we're talking about something that could be built today in France of the United States using mostly already available technology. The UK is next closest, and China would be caught quite off guard as they don't have a lot of this knowledge, like why we run pipes the way we do to survive battle damage, so anything they put out would be significantly less survivable.

My design would be something with the length to beam of Iowa or Vanguard, probably cut down a bit in size. Crew of 300-500, because as the US discovered with the Zumwalts it's fine to automate everything, but you still need sailors who are strong like an ox and smart like a tractor to chip rust and paint, and be present for damage control.

Propulsion: Columbia-like turbo-electric with at least two reactors and at least four large standby generators capable of also propelling the ship, plus batteries to continue power through any short outage. This gives me very long legs, a high cruising speed to get to conflict areas, and significantly lowers logistics requirements without having to carry the fuel load of an Iowa.

Armor scheme is dual layered: an external belt able to reject most common munitions with VLS cells in a multi-pack similar to a VPM behind it and blowout panels so if one is compromised it blows out to sea and doesn't impact adjacent cells. Inside of a second armor belt is the rest of the magazine spaces and fighting spaces. Though steel would be used in the armor, not traditional face hardened armor or RHA, something more modern.  Plus one of those new torpedo defense systems that after the carrier SinkEx was developed and is highly classified.

Sensors, just double up what a Burke has in types of sensors, with the latest available - redundancy. Though delete the towed array. And cooperative capability, so that a B-21 Raider or F-35 or E-2 can provide all the target data the ship needs to target anything while the ship remains quiet.

Armament, 200+ VLS cells, probably closer to 300.  Main guns, a refresh the Des Moines style 8" triple with similar three by three layout - I've got a long slender hull and put the VLS outboard already, let's use the length for intimidation factor. With modern projectiles I don't need more penetration than that, and I maximize my weight per minute on target compared to larger rifles - plus Watervliet or Dahlgren can build them today. Maybe rail guns if we go all out, but 8" seems about right, while being big enough to use sabots for extremely long range and other smart munitions - big enough for all that, small enough to be easily automated. Secondary battery of four 5" destroyer type guns, which also provide fairly significant AA capability, as we've discovered in the Red Sea, and common ammunition. House them all in AGS-style low observability turrets.  And of course, whatever the latest in CIWS and other point defense systems are available, with modularity to upgrade them.

Superstructure a bit Zumwalt-like, maybe the hull form as well, with a fairly substantial superstructure with additional mess and other spaces to have a maximum of 1,000 on board in an emergency for humanitarian work, wartime work, or to carry Marines. Captain's in Port cabin on the O2 level like an Iowa, so you board the ship and pass the massive VLS cells and main guns on your way to dinner parties.

And of course, all of the C&C and drone capability you mentioned, driven from the stern flight deck and hangers.

Now I've got a ship I can sail quietly anywhere I want, then turn on my radars and immediately you're caught off guard, and there's a threat that is very difficult to get rid of. We did it to the Soviets and Iranians with the Iowas, this should be even better at the job of being everywhere and yet nowhere at the same time.

25000 tons.

142 VLS.
8 Extra large VLS cells.
4 76mm PD guns.
2 Directed energy weapons.
2 8" guns, sabotted ammo.
Enlarged Vulcano ammo ( IR and GPS guided ).
12x counter torp torps
ASW firescout class drones.
Scout drones ( Hybrid quad/winged).

i recommend against the metal kallax legs, having stuffed them full of books the flat bottom spreads the weight, on legs the pressure on each leg would be huge, wouldn't do nice things to the floor

I love the concept of swapping out the CCV for some kind of Battleship/control vessel (I'd like to reuse the term 'Protected Cruiser').
I had never imagined the concept of a double deck mission bay, that really opens up the volume available, you can use the full length of the flight deck, hanger and inline mission bay to have an entire lower deck to this accessed by a carrier like internal lift capable of moving USV or containers between decks.
Armour, as said, you will never stop a modern anti-ship missile strike, you have to rely on active defences, energy or kinetic kill. However, you do need your ship to be able to resist the strikes from small to medium size rounds (40mm etc) but also falling debris and 'large shrapnel' from defeated munitions or near misses, so there is a case for an outer casing that is more than standard ships plating.

I was only half listening to this and heard some mention of submarines? Anyway, so I've ordered a dozen new M-Class subs with 406mm guns.

Pod propulsion is something I've been waiting for someone to try on a warship; they're reasonably mature as a commercial product but not aware of any proposals for warships yet.

The two primary goals for a modern battleship would be fleet defense and bombardment. This is only usable during a sustained war with a high level of resistance. Being able to project power during relative peace is the carrier’s responsibility. The only feasible battleship that can fulfill this roll is the retired battleships from the US navy because the economy of bombardment is not sustainable with missiles. Obviously these ships would need hundreds of billions in modernization efforts and numerous ships to protect them but in the end, they would be capable of pounding an enemy nations coast into submission. It’s a very specific requirement/mission that requires a very specific ship

What is the marine/shore deployable complement of this ship? As it's going to be visible it doesn't need the special forces insertion function of an SSN. But then the ability to put a few dozen men ashore feels like part of 'presence', to reinforce an embassy or similar mission.

36:04 My ladies in waiting, one could say

you should mod your ship in Seapower or maybe someone can for you

I don’t know enough about gauss vs rail.  I would think that softer launch forces with gauss might be useful.   Given that could launch things other than solid slugs.

I wonder if a Battleship might be the best platform for a large laser weapon.
The main issue with lasers is that they're limited by the horizon, so have to get (relatively) close to fight for which you'd need battleship protection.
A battleship would also be big enough to mount the kind of nuclear reactor needed to power a battery of offensive and defensive lasers.

Ok, before warching this and after watching Peruns latest "Buy Europe video" im thinking if a mashup of the Vittorio Venetos platform/hanger deck at the back for ships drones and helicopters, 5 x 76mm Super Rapid OTO Melara each side plus a couple of DARDI 40mm and at least a couple of 25mm remote stations. Massive KVLS farm amidships and up front, plus a forward triple turret, the MONARC 155mm turret on steroids. Leave space and power for some 76mm to be replaced with lasers. Have a couple of marine platoons on board with decent ships boats (CB90s in davitts or from a mission bay).

You could propably cram 1 or 2 CVBGs worth of PD for AA and sub warfare equipment worth of stuff on a BB, some missiles and autoloading big guns, it could be a suprisingly versitile ship either going off on its own or sitting next to a carrier both being onther big target that can take a hit better and wall of PD.
