I've Waited Years For This Luminar Update (But Does It Work?)

I explore whether the new Update (1.28.1) for Luminar can actually read and process compressed raw DNG files. If it does it'll open up the ability to edit thousands of photos in Luminar I could never do before. That's good news for more tutorials!

I look forward to the day when words “Luminar” and “frustrating” don’t fall into the same sentence. It’s getting there so hope they keep going.

Definitely, as you say, Anthony, it is a Game changer. I can even open up the new Compressed DNG files from DXO, so coming from DXO PureRAW, the images look really good.
This is bigger than anything coming, and if they keep going this way, I will be leaving Adobe.

The bubble allows the main window to stay at full resolution . I like it.

Hello Anthony, can you please make a video in which you explain exactly how to use different Luminar catalogs? How to label, save and secure them so that you know which (edited) photos belong to which catalog. From which size (GB) of the catalog it is already advisable to create a new one. Best greetings from Munich

The handling of DNG raw files in luminar is a welcomed update. I agree with you on noise. LRC is way ahead in that regard. Bubble is ok. Somewhat distracting. I’m inches away from leaving adobe. Thanks for another great tutorial 🙂👍💫

Great video - now I can't wait to download the update and try it out. As for the "bubble" window, it doesn't matter to me one way or another. But I have to say - having (successfully) raised two girls of my own - my heart goes out to you and what you're going through! The concept of "This too shall pass" comes to mind. :)

Anthony, and I thought I had a lot of storage! It’s great you now can unlock and have a lifetime of other raw editing images! As for circle of yourself, and I’m old, but I study the editing tools as you make changes and explain what you doing. Perhaps pop yourself every now and then and not there on screen too long. You really are a great teacher!

I installed this update and I will also benefit from this. I converted so many photos in Lightroom Classic to .dng in order to save space. I'm excited to be able to revisit those images in Luminar now. This past year, I have been shooting in CRAW on my Canon camera. It is a compressed raw, smaller file, with all the information. Luminar handled these files just fine before this update. So, I no longer convert to .dng. It's too bad that the AI edits are lost between LRC and Luminar, but they are built differently. I don't see any solution soon unless there will be an AI bridge that makes a conversion while importing from LRC.

Nice! My DxO PureRaw 6 RAW files are seen as raw now. Thanks for lighting a fire on this subject.

good news

It's nice that they did this for you/others with the same files.

I've had an issue with how Luminar handles DNGs from DxOPureRaw for while where when I pull down highlights, Luminar puts in a magenta hue. I had sent them some files, but never heard back after that.

HI Anthony on the subject of backing up your Luminar , can you do a quick vlog on that or have you done it , I'm a novice and only back up on ssd. Cheers love your channel

Not Lightroom. I used compressed DNGs with ON1. And earlier this year they just ...dropped it. Now I have dozens of files that I can't access. Except now Luminar does. At least I can get a TIFF out of it. I only discovered that this week, and ironically I only just got the update - so I had no idea how close I'd been to a "head-in-hands lost a load of edited files" situation. Lesson learned. Will archive not remove RAW files.

Hi Anthony, Thanks for the info. I do my noise reduction in DxO photolab, and they allow a compressed dng as the output. Luminar never recognised this as a RAW, but just checked and it is now!. This will save a considerable amount of space, and hopefully I won't end up like youj with boxes of old HDD's. Now just need them to add my new camera profile for the Lumix S5D. Regards Paul.

Bubble window is more of a distraction than benefit. It covers part of the image.
