The former Secretary General of the Madrid branch of the PSOE (Spanish Socialist Workers' Party), Juan Lobato, participated in the program 'El Cascabel' to analyze current political affairs and major social challenges, with a particular focus on the housing market and public order management. During the interview, he highlighted the difficulties of making decisions regarding public safety following the recent encampments in the capital, noting that "the complexity of a public order decision of this type is much greater" than it appears at first glance.
Juan Lobato reflected on his previous experience as mayor to avoid judging the actions of police commanders and technical staff. In this regard, he argued that institutions must weigh the free use of public space against the right to demonstrate, acknowledging that "it is the most difficult decision" a political leader faces.
Regarding the housing problem in Spain, Juan Lobato argued that the root of the difficulty lies in the ratio between salaries and property prices. Therefore, the former leader has advocated for establishing national agreements between the Spanish Government, the autonomous communities, and the municipalities, emphasizing that "there is no alternative to this; the Spanish Government will not be effective without the autonomous communities and the municipalities."
In the regulatory sphere, Juan Lobato has stressed the need to offer legal certainty and tax incentives to small landlords in order to increase the rental supply. He also pointed out that the majority of properties belong to private citizens, highlighting that "93% of the homes in this country are in the hands of individuals, not companies, which also own fewer than five properties."
