In his book, he says that when he's clowning around as a Marx Brother, that's not who he really is, but when he sits down to play the harp, he stops acting, and that's the real man.

I have never heard a harp played this way.
How beautiful Harpo
I miss you

He had the face of an angel and his harp playing was heavenly.  Maybe he was an angel who came to earth for a while, and then went back home again.  I love listening to Harpo play the harp.  None like him before, nor since.

I loved how these movies treated all races and cultures with respect, something very rare at the time.

Harpo was a great genius self taught to play the harp. He was wonderful pure comic genius a wonderful man with his wife and children

Groucho's daughter said in an interview that she'd walk over to Harpo's house when her parents were fighting... which was a lot! She also said she felt more loved by him than her own father. What a great man!

Watching him play makes my soul purr.  He was so wonderful.

My favorite out of all of the Marx Brothers!

One thing I've always loved about the Marx Brothers movies is the musical performances by Chico & Harpo. Chico plays piano whimsically, at least one time without even looking at the keys, but still with incredible talent. Harpo, when he plays harp, stops being Harpo and the harp becomes his entire world - and again, with incredible talent.

Harpo Marx didn't perform his music "live" in the movies (an exception being the accompaniment to "O Solo Mio" in "Monkey Business").  He recorded the work in a studio and then went through it on the set, as a loudspeaker played the music for him to sync to.  The effect in "Go West" is a surprisingly realistic faux performance on a loom.

Chico Marx, on the other hand, usually recorded his piano on set, as he wanted it to be spontaneous.

I love how, even though it's just some strings on wood, he "plays" it as if it were really a harp.   He has an autobiography titled, Harpo Speaks.  It's long, but so interesting.  I really recommend it.

I don't care if it's the original sound, all I need to know is that Harpo played like an angel and that he was a great, really great, musician. And I don't know why but this scene made me cry ;)

I have only just discovered Harpo Marx , absolutely brilliant, what an incredibly talented musician. Such joy. Thank you Eric.

Just incredible... When you watch his face you can see when he goes from being a comedian to being a musical genius.

There is absolutely nothing today, that can compare to Harpo's musical talent, and just how funny he could be. I have most of the Marx Brothers movies and I watch them. The best parts are when Harpo plays. He's top side now, playing for the Big Man,and chasing the odd Angel now and then.

Brilliant beyond belief

Part of the fun of a Marx Brothers movie was seeing the various plot devices the producers used to work Harpo's harp soli into the film.

Not only does he play flawlessly, they all learned to do it with choreographed and exaggerated hand movements. Even the hands are entertaining.

Always enjoyed the clever ways they'd make the harp appear from seemingly unlikely places in the films.

my vote for Harpo's most beautiful harp solo
