The fact that Eridians are so social to the point of needing to be together so they can sleep means that Rocky probably felt more alone than humans can even comprehend between the time his crewmates died and when he met Grace

Best line of the movie: "He tells me what to do, he tells me how to do it, tells me why to do it. He tells me when to do it. And then when I do it, he's like 'what are you doing?'".

This is how to incorporate humor into a story without undermining the drama of it.

44:20 you have to forgive Rocky for being clingy... before Grace arrived he had been out there alone.... for 47 years...

One really nice subtle touch at the end is that Grace and Rocky have learned enough of each others’ languages that they no longer need a computer translating for them.

Rocky's species lives in 400-degree temperatures and 19 atmospheres of pressure and breathes ammonia. When he went into Grace's atmosphere, he was exposed to oxygen and literally caught fire on the inside. The book goes into a lot more detail about Rocky's biology; I highly recommend reading it. It's in my top 3 books of all time.

Fun fact, Astronauts only get their gold wings after returning to Earth and the scene where the camera shows they gave Grace gold wings while he’s knocked out is done to show that all 3 Astronauts got gold wings before launching because they knew they weren’t coming back

I love the dichotomy of Stratt telling Grace he has 3 hours to choose to go on a mission with no plans to return and Rocky telling Grace to take a long time to decide to return home

Grace is a microbiologist. Rocky is an engineer. Thats one reason they made such a great team.

Also, that epilogue on Erid, in the book, takes place 16 years after they reached Erid.

The more I think about it, Grace gave the Eridians probably the most inspirational gift you could ever ask for.

In one moment, an entire species found out they were in fact not alone in the universe. On top of that, they learned they were a friendly and curious species, just like them.

Not only did he help save their star and their planet, he did so AFTER turning back to save Rocky.

In one day the learned they weren't alone, and that one of them was willing to sacrifice himself for them.

In one swoop, grace turned that cold and unforgiving cosmic dark into a sea of potential.

A sea of hope.

The flashbacks aren't just for viewers to see, they are Grace remembering those moments and we see that as flashbacks at the same time he regains the memory.

He wasn't ready to risk his life to save Earth, but in the end, he was ready to risk his life to save his friend. As cpt Yao said: "You just need someone to be brave FOR"

Great movie.

They get the beetles around 25 years after the Hail Mary left Earth. Due to relativity, Grace has only experienced a fraction of that time, which explains why his planned return to Earth, before the Taumoeba leak, was just over 4 years, not the 12 or so the journey counts on Earth. That’s why he looks so much younger than Stratt.

One thing not made clear in the film is that this is also the Eridians' first interstellar ship. They built it for the same reason Earth built the Hail Mary.

Grace's character arc in this story is fantastic. He starts by thinking he's a hero, eventually realizes he was actually a coward who was unwilling to sacrifice himself. Then, at the end, he 'found someone to be brave for' and sacrificed his chance to return to Earth to save his friend. Beautiful story.

The way Grace speaks with funny jokes that seems childish and doesn't actually curse, is because he got used to speak "censored" as a high-school teacher, which is adorable 😂💙

43:15
"Here is a rock."
Yes
"You will now care for this rock."
Yes
"The rock is now in mortal peril."
OH NO

51:34 is the funniest shit ever. "IF SHIP NOT AT PRECISE ANGLE AND SPEED, WE DIE. EXAMPLE-" thunk

So many Reactors I follow are watching this movie for the first time at home so they can record the reactions. I think I speak for all of us when I say: The Fandom thanks you for your sacrifice!
