Two stories for you. #1 shows the difference between flying and driving. I was stationed at an Air Force Base in northern Maine. I could get in my car and drive south, and in 3 1/2 hours, I would get to Bangor, the largest city in Maine. I could get in my USAF airplane, take off from the base, and in 3 1/2 hours I would be crossing over the Florida coastline into the Gulf of (then) Mexico.
Story #2 was when I was flying charter passengers in a Piper Seneca from Fort Lauderdale, FL to Freeport in the Bahamas. As we descended from cruise altitude to traffic patter altitude, there was an Eastern Airlines 737 (? it was a jet) flying patterns at Freeport. We descended into the pattern about a quarter mile on the far side of the airport from the Eastern jet. We all waved at the pilot, and he waved back. It was fascinating to me that our speed after the descent was about the same as the jet in the traffic pattern. Of course, the jet turned to base lag while we continued a half a mile on downwind, and we never saw him again.

Security in Atlanta is going to take a huge chunk of her time. I grew up in Augusta, and it was always so much quicker to do TSA here and connect in ATL (even with a 2+ hour layover) than it would be to deal with Atlanta traffic AND airport security.

Gotta say that you are correct about driving being twice the time of flying a small plane. When I drive to Key West, it usually takes me around 8 hours. When I flew it, only four hours. I had breakfast in Orlando, lunch at Key West.
