The RX-7 and RX-8, unique wonders of automotive engineering and automobile design. A unique glimpse into what is possible beyond the brute conformity of the SUV or the supremacist monstrosities of German engineering. Both Japanese cars authentic to the culture - living creatures with a beating heart. Thank you for your understanding and loyalty to the brand.
Thank you for making these videos showing people that these rotary's can be very reliable. I picked up my 3rd 8 last spring a 2005 with only 5,040 miles on the clock. my first one a bought wrecked at tech school and put 75k miles on that with no problems before selling to get another lower mileage one and just sold that last spring after putting 55k miles on that one to buy this super low mileage one I had been searching for. These are such fun and usable cars and supporting mods can add so much more to the already great platform.
I bought a new RX-8 in '04 and drove it as my daily driver for 11 years and ~120k miles. I only stopped driving it because it was totaled in an accident when I was hit in the driver side A-pillar. The key to keeping the rotary healthy is to get regular oil changes (never let the oil level get low) and replace the coils about every 40k miles.
I've owned 3 rotary engine Mazdas('81 RX-7 and '86 RX-7 Turbo). I didn't have any engine issues with any of them. I always wondered why Mazda didn't have a separate oil tank for the oil metering pump. Yes, it does require another fluid level to monitor, but the benefits would far exceed the hassle.
I got my 2007 RX-8 in 2012 at about 40k km - driving it now for about 15 years approaching 90k km on the first rotary engine (with no premix). Great / Amazing sports car. Warm starts are getting a little bit slower to about 3-5 secs, no rust, no mechanical issues. I replaced most of the rear suspension struts and front lower wishbone 2 years ago. Some advice from my side: Do regular oil checks and fill ups, do your yearly oil changes (I would say around 5000-7500 km), still using 5W30 mineral oil. I would probably switch to 10W30 or 10W40 full synthetic when rebuilding the engine at some point and installing a Sohn adapter. Keep your battery fresh (change every 4-5 years). Otherwise keep the rest of the maintenance schedule but rather shorten the intervall on your full ignition kit (spark plugs, cables and ignition coils) - if you keep the stock ignition coils, change usually around 30k - mine went out at 42k and 76k taking the catalytic converter with them.
I was able to cure my hard hot starts by doing a serious 2 month long marvel mystery / transmission fluid mix eternal full engine soak, some people do this using diesel fuel, I dropped the cat pipe and blinded the exhaust with home made wooden blind, pulled the top plugs out and screwed in plastic fittings threaded one side, barbed other side, screw them into the spark plug holes with two clear hoses (barbed side) running up to top of the engine into a jug, pull the air pump and fill the engine with the oil mix, now slowly turn the alternator pulley a couple turns every couple of weeks while the engine soaks, when soaked good pull the bling off of the exhaust and drain the oil, place a 8 inch wide 10 feet long A/C metal duct over the exhaust flange wrapped with a wet towel and bump the starter after you have replaced the spark plugs and air pump, have a fire extinguisher and water hose close by as you spin her over blowing a ton of carbon out. sorry my reply comments are turned off.
My RX8 lasted just short of 200k miles was tuned straight piped and was bridgeported i always mixed my fuel and it just requires more love than most cars do
Sohn adapter is a big trap new drivers fall into. Ask a rebuilder who has been doing it for over a decade. They will tell you the sohn adapter is worse than running the stock omp BECAUSE it reduces the pressure of the spray from the oil injector.
The most important factor is the spray. If it doesnt not encompass most of the housing, it will only protect a very limited area which is useless.
Either change your oil every 3k miles and dont worry about it, or delete the omp and run 1.5 oz of 2 stroke per gallon. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
NICE!! very nice car and wheel choice. I love to see how happy you are.. and that sums up how I feel too. Nice color choices too. You have the same spoiler as I do. Yeah... many times, when it breaks down, it's a cheap fix, provided you can fix it yourself. It's good to know a mechanic. You will learn a lot. Yeah... the rear suspension is a weak point. Upgrade to strong lowering springs. Upgrade the sway bars. Short Shifter, and get syncrosaver.... it will save your transmission - and it feels really nice when shifting gears. Also.... when your amplifier goes - DM ME - ok? that's a heavy job. But, well worth the upgrade (You need to replace almost everything) (Might as well replace the head unit too).
Ive owned mine for 3 weeks and its 8k miles on the rebuild good on compression. I bought it for 6k and have already spent 6k fixing everything wrong with the car that the last owner didnt inform me about. Rotary hasnt been a problem yet.
the people that complain about this beauty just simple do NOT take care of it!! rotary engines are work, but they’re fascinating!! just making sure you keep your maintenance up to date…. spark plugs, pre-mixing, oil changes, PREMIUM gas. they’ll run foreverrrrrr (until you replace the rotary (not a terrible fix either)
owner of RX8 with turbo added and i can confirm that if you respect the basic maintenance (oil change, filters etc) and dont fool around with cold engine or let the motor fry the car is super reliable to the point that made me believe that the ones that allege that the motors break should do really crazy staff. its an amazing machine and totally love it
Subscribed! thanks for the video. I have one as well. Master Cylinder failed 3 weeks ago. Waiting on parts and my mechanic friend to help me swap. Almost 200,000kms. I just got a new engine. Engine #4. No regrets. Even when the car is broken down, or on a towtruck-bed, I still get compliments "Wow nice looking ride man!". She is.... ya, she is SO good looking. Watching my young sons jump up and down when ever I come pick them up in this car, makes my heart sing even more. Esp since my Ex married a guy who drives an Impreza STI. Yup... daddy's not going to get an SUV anytime soon. Love Colette too much (Yes, the car's name)..... kinda explains why I have an Ex too.
