I am from the Plymouth, MA area. My advice is to go see the replica of the Mayflower, go see Plymouth Plantation, get some chowder and local beer at the Cabby Shack, and get a dozen cupcakes at Cupcake Charlie's for dessert.

I went for a look at the pyramids early in the 80s. We took a taxi out of Cario. We were literally the only tourist there. I have a photo of the three pyramids and the only other thing in the photo is a camel. I am pleased I got to see them before the experience has been ruined. I have travelled to a fair few countries. Egypt was one country I would have gone back to. Not any more judging by the number of negative comments about Egypt on Reddit. I am pleased I am old.

As someone who occasionally volunteers at a tourist trap (Secret Caverns), the best thing that you can do is try to get an early or late tour on an off-season day. The tours are more laid back, the guides are less stressed, and more likely to honestly answer any questions that they have answered sarcastically a thousand times before.

Oh, and tips. if everyone on the tour pitches in $.50 you might think it's insulting, but when the tour has 40 people on it...

Omg it had to be The Grand America Hotel for me.  I was driving through Wyoming to get to a tiny convention back in 2019.  There is absolutely nothing out there but hostile winds, and billboards for the Grand America.  "50 cent Ice Cream Cones!" "Relax in our lounge!" "24 Hour relief!" billboards for about 100 miles before you get to it, literally in the middle of nowhere.  The Lounge was just a glorified gas station, with a big gift shop and a restaraunt. Although, I will admit, the bathrooms were really nice.

As a new yorker times Square is a complete tourist trap, I only like Broadway

16:50 Someone in our group asked about the museum items (the leather materials not even gone hard), and the guide explained most of the real artifacts usually get taken by the bigger museums. Before they are, they have local artists create replicas the best they can, and make them look new, as it would've years ago (thankfully, most techniques are still practiced by the tribes to make the replicas perfect)

Boy Plymouth Rock sure shows up in this thing a lot.

I suddenly don't feel bad for not traveling. Seems like I'm not missing a damn thing! lol

So, you're telling me that Plymouth rock is...a rock? Who would have thought? 😂

Back in the 80's my mom's co-worker told her about an amusement park in Wisconsin called Aqualand (or something like that). It may have been at one time a long time before, but it was more of a zoo. We were so disappointed lol.

I went to Cairo in 1996. We went to the Pyramids, and there were on around 20 people there.

We actually got to go inside, all the way up to the Sarcophagus Room.
Amazing! The guide told us about the engineering of the Pyramids and it is still just unbelievable how they accomplished this.

The Mona Lisa comment was dead on target. Seeing Paris was great. Seeing all of the sights was great too. But the Mona Lisa looked like a picture of itself. I'm serious if you take any high definition photo of it in books or online and make them actual size somehow, you saved yourself a trip.

I saw a sign on a shed in Indiana saying that Wall Drug was like 600 miles away. That’s a lot of advertising for a themed mall.

Pyramids: I did a guided trip with three friends in Egypt in 1998 - on horseback, experienced riders only. It started near the Pyramids. We had to navigate the very excited horses through the early morning Cairo traffic. We all had a groom hanging on the bridle of each horse until we reached the last road we had to cross. They led us across and just let the horses go. They sprinted up the long sand dune and calmed right down when we came to the top of it. We stopped and… there was this enormous basin with the Pyramids!! Absolutely unreal and like out of a movie. We climbed down the other side of the dune and got to gallop past the Pyramids, feeling like Lawrence of Arabia. The trip was 10 days from sight to sight and sleeping in tents at night. I will never ever forget it!

The Great Wall of China. I could appreciate the history of it, but it... was a wall... the best part was the luge down. A random dog also led me to a building I was wondering about and promptly vanished, but... yeah. :P

The Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota that dad started dragging us off to see back in the 80s. We had more fun going to see it than seeing it.

The sad thing with tourist locations especially in third world countries is that it seems that the citizens get pushed aside and the tourists get focused on

As a South Carolinian with North Carolinian grandparents, I love all the disses towards South of the Border. It’s totally warranted, too- i’m gonna miss the inevitable day when Buc-ees takes over the land but it is an empty, dead, shell of a tourist trap

I love the Plymouth Rock size comparison with a toilet

Re: Mt Rushmore-I'm sorry it was that foggy.  But there is more to it than what you initially see.  There is a hiking trail that will get you up to the site.  If you like hiking, kayaking, camping or just being outdoors in general, then there is a lot to do in the general Black Hills area and it will probably appeal to you.  There are tours of Jewel Cave and Windcave parks,  tourist attractions in the mining towns and Custer State Park are just to name some of them.   Crazy Horse monument is under construction.  It is pricey, but you are helping pay for it as it's cost is privately funded and still is in development.
