What Happened to Analog Horror?

Talking about analog horror, its entities, and making videos covering the genre has been great and one hell of a ride I've enjoyed. It looks like a lot of you have too. But, I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I have my issues with the genre. It just feels like it’s dying, that it’s been milked for all it has or that it’s on life support or its final legs. But is it really? And is there a future for analog horror?

Btw, if a trope is overused, it's a cliche

Best way to describe where analog horror is
Hyper realistic phase. Basically the same spot that killed creepypastas for a while in the late 2010s but in recent times we've seen a resurgence of creepypastas so I think Analog horror can have a Renaissance. Oh well heres to you digital horror

I'd say Analog Horror is in the same spot Gmod/Source horror is in
While not entirely dead they got bogged down by repetition and just horrible slop for lack of a better term, but there are some great gems that shine through every now and again

One of my biggest issues is that so many times people don't even know what analog media even is. I've seen multiple "analog" horror videos and it's a recording of Minecraft with some VHS filters on. Like yeah, I'm sure you recorded your 2009 video game videos onto a VHS tape. Also there's the overuse of distorted faces/smiles and mimic type monsters

Fun fact: the Blair witch project didn’t even have a script. They just gave some people a camera and said “go make spoopy movie”

I still just call it found footage. Ever since lost tapes came out on animal planet I've been in love with these types of horrors. Just screw AI and slop farmage man

The over abundance of humanoid monsters also pisses me off, it’s always just Tall person with big smile.

I wanna see some multi legged abomination living in the sewers eating people like a Snickers bar.

I think it's just the cycle of anything popular that is public domain, easily accessible and easy to contribute to. Backrooms, creepypastas, analog horror. They all have or had phases where it used to be all quality starting out, and then it gets increasingly inbred as the same tropes and ideas keep being recycled and remixed. Eventually the novelty runs out and it becomes a defined, predictable thing, and then it's just a matter of time before fatigue sets in. I think that's how we get things like "backrooms were ruined by monsters" when the initial post that introduced them literally mentioned monsters.

Honestly, it's a little upsetting the state analog horror is currently in, I've been a big fan of the genre for years since I first watched Local 58, and I'm really hoping the current analog horror series that are being worked on can bring it back.

Yes and no

an oversaturation for sure but there is still a number of series that shine through the slop.

Vita cartis is a good analog horror. The amount of work they put into making the props for the monsters its amazing

The ai summary under this video calling it a “battle between innovation and repetition” seems like the biggest reach in universe. AI is not “innovation” in the analogue horror genre, it’s a sort cut.
