I was born in the middle of the 60s in Guatemala. The skies were always full of birds in the mornings and in the afternoons, now days, the skies are empty, no birds no sound, only the smoke of fields of sugar cane which are set alight. It is very sad, the remaining trees have no visitors at all! We need to respect and protec Mother Earth and her true Children!!!

This is an example of humans with nature, enabling the nature we are part to maintain the balance in different climates that keep an areas environment healthy and thriving ... vs humans against nature, controlling nature to consume any beautiful example of life, out of existence for short term profit.

My uninformed question: The captive populations of these parrots that are continents away from their original habitats, are, I assume, (yes, I know. 😮) living on diets that are quite different from the plant species found in this Brazilian desert... If so, why would a re-wilding project -- NEED! -- to be based -- ONLY! -- in the original habitats? Why can't they be introduced into different, though similar, habitats around the world? Why not establish new populations in scattered areas? A scattered population would protect them from a single-source threat, like the virus mentioned...
I don't believe an "Invasive Species" argument is relevant, since the most impactful -- Invasive Species -- are the farmers, ranchers, miners, and industrial developers, who are the worst destroyers of habitats, everywhere... And..!!! We then bring all of the domesticated (invasive) animals we raise. Add to that, all of the other (invasive) species that hitchhike rides wherever we go --
Sorry... That ship has sailed. Invasive Speciation is now the norm, across the world.
If the goal is to re-establish the parrot populations, holding to an "Originalist" mindset is harmful, not helpful.., in any way... 🤔
