As far as I can tell, Ariel gains popularity as a feminine name after Disney's little mermaid. Before Disney (B.D.) the feminine form was usually Arielle, and Ariel was (usually) masculine, as in Shakespeare's The Tempest

We have this idea that pre-modern people didn't have complex ideas about cosmology or theology, but they did. Sometimes correct order can only be maintained through violence against intruding chaos. Rebelling against the state was an act of chaos that threatened correct order on a cosmological level.
