I also note that Poseidon is the God of Earthquakes, as well as the Sea (the Thera eruption caused severe earthquakes on Crete), and that huge volcanic ash clouds often generate lightning...

Sadly there are so many lost works of the ancient Greek poets, some identified by reference in other works, and likely many, many more that did not warrant such reference or were simply forgotten/lost already in later antiquity.

Now I'm wondering if the myth of Hades and Persephone, and the subsequent winter brought about, might be inspired by an eruption like Santorini.

Great channel bros asking the real questions this why I love the internet give him a Like

That totally makes sense!! Thanks for the great description!

Could the giants -- Talos and Polyphemus -- who hurled rocks be personifications of Catapults and Trebuchet-type machines? How far back in time do those inventions go? Did they exist before those myths were written down?

Your videos are always informative and fun. Your enthusiasm is evident. Cheers

I was always taught their main island exploded basically destroying their capital. A volcanic eruption destroying an island would produce an ash cloud which builds a lot of static and therefore lightning, plus the tsunamis that would produce would flood other coastal communities. That would perfectly match the ancient accounts as well as the gods involved.

It makes sense that Poseidon, god of the Seas, was also naturally the god of Tsunamis, and of earthquakes by extension.

The problem with identifying Kyklopes as Minoans is that unlike the Minoans they were said to build polygonal walls without mortar.

I love the video so much, Im a mega minoan fan, and i approve of this channel.

Many thanks for this video.  Your level of knowledge and research is amazing.

The Talos character sounds like the Colossus of Rhodes. I wonder if when they made that statue, they were inspired by this Talos figure. And I'm trying to picture what this guy would even look like, so he was an enormous metal robot?

Tectamus was the son of Dorus and grandson of Hellen. According to Diodorus Siculus, Tectamus invaded Crete together with a horde of Aeolian and Pelasgian settlers and became the island's king. 61 It was the third of the tribes that migrated to Crete.
According to another version, Tectamus was a chief of Dorians and Achaeans.!" He married Cretheus' (Cres') daughter who gave birth to his son Asterion.

Perhaps a Cyclops was a metal worker blind in one eye. Without eye protection metal working must have been known for the risk of serious eye damage. After damaging one eye you would take great care protecting the other.

Good to see euhemerism on less known topics.

Delightful presentation. Thanks so much.

Awesome video 😄

I had a hypothesis that the story of Theseus and the minotaur was a folk memory of the mycenaean conquest of the Minoans. We know both Athens and Theseus' home city were mycenaean citadels. Athens had a Minoan colony near it. The bull and the labrys were their symbols and we found some evidence of human sacrifice in Minoan temples. My hypothesis is that in the wake of the eruption of the Thera volcano and the subsequent tsunami the Minoans underwent a religious reconning. The old female deities began to fall out of favor in favor of a more masculine sea and storm god (possibly an archaic form of Poseidon), as seen in their pottery records. This could have sparked a reactionary backlash by the matriarchal priestess class that had ruled for so long to the point some of them made deals with Mycenaeans to supplant this new order and regain their power by teaching them Linear A (remembered as the golden yarn) to navigate their palace systems (remembered as the labyrinth) and essentially cut the legs out from this new reactionary era of Minoan civilization by attacking their logistics. With the head of the serpent (or bull in this case) cut off, the Minoans would either be incapable or all too happy to assist in a Mycenaean takeover, the human sacrifices of Mycenaean peoples would have stopped, and the priestesses would have cemented their power in this new system reinterpreted in the mythological structure as a political marriage.
