Making Mokume from Quarters - A Step By Step Guide

Today I am showing you how to make Mokume with quarters in this step by step tutorial video

Mokume looks really pretty by itself, but can also be made into jewelry or as a pommel or guard on a knife handle

I start by forge welding the quarters together and then when everything is in one solid piece I clean it up and dip it in ferric chloride to reveal the pattern.

nicely done… do remember that ferric chloride is contaminated with copper now, if you soak any ferrous metal in it the copper in solution will passivate onto it.

If you have a oxy acetylene torch you can do it all in the vice. Just heat and squish.

I put the quarters in a piece of iron gas pipe, heat it in the forge then pound it with a solid pipe inside the gas pipe. Then take it out of the gas pipe and work my pattern into it.

You could add brass coins/tokens to get three color mokume gane.

I'm guessing they used a fluck core welder on the welded stack. I think a tig welder would do better. I haven't welded quarters (thanks to your video I want to try it) but I have welded copper (pre-1982) pennies very cleanly using a DC tig using stripped and cleaned copper wire as filler rod. Once I got the settings and technique right I didn't even need filler, just tack welds. Cool idea and nice work.

Nice! For that final blank, do you remember roughly how many quarters you needed? Around 40 or so?
I had the "using coins like this is illegal" speech from my sister the first time I tried messing around like this, I looked up the law like you did. Always good to have a solid comeback argument 😂😂💙👍
