so true about being an english major and only writing for school. I may have an idea or tip that could work well for you - based on a few videos I've binged, hah. You've talked about pantsing and wanting to get to know your characters.

Something I accidentally stumbled into with my current project was writing a first-person “autobiography" as my main character. She ends up becoming a kind of celebrity, so it made sense that she might write one someday. But honestly, I think this can apply to almost any story. It doesn't have to be an autobiography - it could just as easily be a journal, a diary, whatever.

So, I just started typing. Not even in order. Just pure stream of consciousness. No pretty prose - just the events, the feelings, the emotions, the important people, her fears and quirks. Basically, all of it, in her voice.

At first, it felt weird and kind of dumb. But once I got over that hump, it turned out to be really productive. It was a double win: I got to know and develop the character, while also shaping the story. It became this creativity/brain exercise, like: "Okay, what would be an exciting turn now in this autobiography? Why is she writing it? What are the biggest struggles, fondest moments, pivotal people, fears, conflicts, or resolutions she'd talk about? And what childhood experiences or personality traits might have shaped those choices? What is THE DRAMA here?"

Once I started thinking that way, the creativity just flowed.

And when it finally felt compelling and fun, I split it into arcs - and suddenly I had the outline for a full trilogy, hah. Right now I'm just trying to make the first book a good stand alone, but the amount of material I got out of this was crazy.

Now I'm going back and writing the events in third person, which is giving me the actual book. Sure, there are still blind spots and dark areas to fill in, but it's been such a huge help to really know the characters right from the start.

That "autobiography" approach made the creative process fun and engaging.

As a follow crinicly ill girly, I can't wait to read this book. <3
