How American farms became inferior to Europe’s – this video absolutely blew me away!
Europe is doing agriculture so much smarter than America, and I can’t believe we don’t have something like this. The standout was Spain’s Almería region — massive greenhouse cities covering land the size of Manhattan that supply roughly 50% of Europe’s fresh produce (tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, etc.) year-round. Efficient water use, controlled climates, huge yields per square meter — it’s next-level compared to America’s vast but less intensive open-field model.
As an American, this one left me stunned and a little jealous. Why aren’t we copying this? Which part shocked you most? Drop it below! 🌱🇪🇸

I am a farmer in Greece and soil degradation is not BS it's something that is truly happening, for example my Grandfather had an apple farm that he got from his father, so that farm was growing apples for 100+ years.
When i started farming it and even though i used the best and most advanced methods the final product was far worse than what my grandfather used to produce, the answer was the soil, it got degraded over the years of constantly producing the same thing, all nutrients were spent.
You have to cycle produce and give the soil time to recover, heavy pesticides only make things worse so you have to act accordingly if you don't want to kill your farm and turn it into a desert.

Crop rotation is essential for keeping the soil in good condition. Growing the same crop in the same place for many years. Gradually depletes the soil of certain nutrients and promotes the proliferation of specialized pest and weed populations that adapt to that crop system. Without balancing nutrient use and diversifying pest and weed issues, the productivity of monocultures is highly dependent on external inputs that may be harmful to the soil's fertility. Conversely, a well-designed crop rotation system can reduce the need for synthetic fertilizers and herbicides by using ecosystem services from a diverse set of crops. Additionally, crop rotations improve soil structure and organic matter, which will reduce erosion and increases farm system resilience overall. 🚜 Spain do this very well.

The Netherlands also produces extreme amounts of vegetables. Iceland is on the rise. They have free geothermal energy and are very competitive.

The US are the overwhealmingly largest importer of planting soil at around 85%. Your soil is exausted. And no, there is no abundance of soil on earth at all. What she said there was pretty accurate.

19:30 - Your top soil in the US will almost definately be useless because you are not looking after it. In Europe under the EU's Common Agric Policy we are actually paying farmers to look after the land, not just far it.

Market Share: The Netherlands and Spain (primarily Almería) alternate as market leaders depending on the season. Almería dominates the winter months, while the Netherlands serves the majority of the North European market during spring and summer.

The Dust Bowl was actually centred around the Oklahoma Panhandle and from there radiated out into the whole Great-Plains. Many Farmers who subsequently lost their livelihood then moved to California.
That is actually one big reason why California is and was so successful in the subsequent decades. The Influx of those People.

omg as a northern swede.. if i lived in the us i would grow everything myself!! i mean here in the cold north we grow tomatoes qucumbers bellpeppers so on in the summer!! i could feed the whole neighbourhood in the us!! start grow ure vegetables! u have the climate for it!

its a huge difference between soil and soil!

It's 20 to 25% over all and only 50% in winter, but nearly 70% of all salads.

It's so old fashion but new to Spain. And the Netherlands are the second biggest agriculture exportes in the World.

19:52 She said degraded to make it basically useless. It's cos of intensive monocrop farming. And also, during droughts and floods, the topsoil is blown or washed away. In bad droughts, Australia loses a shitload of topsoil to the wind (similar to California in the 1930s). In our case it ends up in the Pacific Ocean and NZ.

Jacob, back when I was in primary school, we learned about how crops are grown in NSW to feed the people. Amongst those lessons was the word “fallow”. When you doubted that the soil degraded, I knew you hadn’t been taught this when you were in school.

“Key Aspects of Fallow Land (Agriculture)
Purpose: To recover soil fertility, break pest cycles, and retain moisture.
Method: The land is often tilled or harrowed but not planted.
Timing: Left unseeded for one or more growing seasons.”

Even the Australian aboriginals understood this, because they lived off the land but didn’t stay on the same area for more than a season. They moved to a different area and ate what grew there, giving the former land time to recover. They’ve been doing that for thousands of years. They don’t farm, they live off the land and then move, to let nature restore the soil and regenerate the plants.

Fun Fact: The starvation in the Netherlands in WWI led to the discovery of Celiac disease. People with the disease suddenly got better when the country had no wheat grain available at all. And as soon as the aid poored in, they got sick again. Some smart people figured out the correlation. I don't know the details, but it's on of the few positives about that period during WWII in the Netherlands.

The Netherlands is one of the smallests countries in the world, only about 0.44% of the US landmass and "only" about 50% of that in farmland. But it's the 2nd biggest exporter of agricultural products (behind the US) in the world, #1 in veal, #1 in stem flowers, #1 meat exporter in Europe, #1 eggs exporter in Europe (16% of global eggs export). Also the world's leading university in the agricultural field/technology is there in Wageningen. Just imagine what the US could do with a similar level of efficiency.

The idea of massive greenhouses covered in plastic originated in the Canary Islands, obviously. Here we grow crops in volcanic soil with sunshine practically year-round.
