Sports serves as a channel of inspiration and salvation that transcends victory and defeat. The World Sports Mission, which has been carrying out missionary work in this field, marks its 50th anniversary this year. We met with Missionary Kim Yong-ki, the representative of the organization, to reflect on the grace of the past half-century and to hear a new future vision for sports missions toward the next generation. Reporter Jung Hee-jin reports.

The World Sports Mission has reached its 50th anniversary. How would you look back on the past 50 years, during which you began sowing the seeds of the Gospel in the once barren world of sports?

[Missionary Kim Yong-ki / Representative of the World Sports Mission]

The World Sports Mission is an interdenominational missionary organization established in 1976 by early pioneers for the evangelization of the nation and the world through sports. Over the past 50 years, God has called us to partner with the Korean church and believers, enabling Christian athletes to rise up and carrying out the ministry of sowing the seeds of the Gospel both domestically and internationally through them. I am spending this time praying and preparing to make a new start in the work of meeting people through sports and using God’s Gospel to transform, build up, and save people.

Major global sporting events, such as the World Cup and the Asian Games, are taking place. I imagine many people are curious about how the arena of victory and defeat can become a channel for the Gospel.

Sports possess a special power that transcends culture, borders, and race. That is why, in major competitions like the Olympics, World Cup, and Asian Games, countless people from all over the world gather to communicate and engage in various exchanges through sports matches. I believe that is precisely why this is a valuable venue for mission work. In particular, when people and the world are moved by the lifestyle of Christian sports mission athletes—not only when they win on the field, but even when they lose—seeing how they strive to win medals and train with self-discipline in their daily lives, I believe there is a clear direction for mission work. We can testify that over the past 50 years, the Gospel of Christ has been manifested and spread through the celebrations of many Christian athletes giving glory to God, through their prayers, and through their fair play.

You have established a direction of moving from growth to essence and unity. I understand that you have plans to expand the horizons of missions to include recreational sports and local churches. Please explain.

[Missionary Kim Yong-ki / Representative of World Sports Mission]

If the past was an era centered on the pioneering and expansion of sports missions, I believe the next 50 years must move toward an era of restoring the essence of the Gospel and pursuing growth. We are currently preparing to serve local churches by establishing policies and strategies to determine how the Gospel can be expanded to nations around the world through recreational sports within local churches, as well as through national elite athletes and star players.

You are planning the 1st Sports Mission Forum in October. It is a gathering where about 20 organizations and young people will unite. Do you expect this to be a turning point for the Korean missionary community?

[Missionary Kim Yong-ki / Representative of the World Sports Mission]

It is a time when about 20 domestic mission organizations gather to share their characteristics, philosophies, and strategies. It is not just the heads of the organizations who gather; missionaries carrying on the next generation and those working in the field, young sports leaders, and some local church leaders also attend. Therefore, we are designing this so that the good examples of sports mission organizations can be mutually exchanged, shared, and connected with local churches, next-generation missionaries, and other organizations. I believe this will be a significant turning point for the Korean sports mission community, shifting its direction from competition to unity, and from method to essence.

You are now at the starting point of a new 50 years. I imagine you have a message you wish to convey to the believers and pastors in Korea watching this broadcast, as well as to sports missionaries around the world, regarding the spread of the Gospel through sports.

[Missionary Kim Yong-ki / Representative of World Sports Mission]

Approximately 200 sports missionaries are out in 38 countries spreading the Gospel. While we have sustained this work so far through their passion and dedication, I would be grateful if you could pray that for the next 50 years, we can successfully implement administrative systems and member care systems so that our global sports missionaries can carry out their ...
