Everyone mentions his off the field issues as the downfall of his career. I’d contend that he might have just pitched so much as a youth and through his 20s that he ran out of bullets. His fist 8 seasons he was 132-53. A .714 win pct. He’d started 232 games and pitched over 1700 innings with 57 CGs and 21 Shutouts. He has 26 years old by that point. He’d completed half of his 16 seasons by that point and wouldn’t be the same from then on. Let’s not forget Lincecum being done similarly.
Dwight Gooden is a hall of famer. He had a winning pct. of .714 through his first 8 seasons. He won 157 games and threw 23 shoutouts before turning 30. He won a WS. He should have been the NL CY winner his rookie season. He should have won MVP in 1985. He tossed a no hitter and won 194 games before retiring. Had his career ended from injury after 8 years he’d be voted in. He was a 19 year old kid who was a man amongst boys in the majors. He was the brightest star in the biggest city. He won more games than Koufax did before 30. It’s the Hall of FAME, not the Hall of Stats. PUT HIM IN!
