Alibaba just built what it calls China's most powerful AI chip, and it is aimed straight at Nvidia's market.

On September 22, 2026, at the Apsara Conference in Hangzhou, Alibaba CEO Eddie Wu unveiled the Zhenwu V900 from Alibaba's T-Head chip unit: 216GB of memory per card, 1.2TB/s chip-to-chip bandwidth, three times the performance of the Zhenwu M890 according to Alibaba, clusters of up to 500,000 cards, and mass production pulled forward to Q1 2027. On memory and interconnect, the V900 outguns Nvidia's H200 on paper (141GB, 900GB/s).
In this breakdown we trace the price math behind the move: Chinese buyers were quoted around $27,000 for a single Nvidia H200, Raymond James once estimated an H100 cost about $3,320 to make, and Nvidia just posted a 75% gross margin on $96.2 billion in quarterly revenue.

We follow Alibaba's path from the Hanguang 800 in 2019 to the M890 in May 2026, Jensen Huang's admission that Nvidia's China share has "dropped to zero," IDC's 2025 numbers showing Chinese chipmakers at 41% of China's AI accelerator market, and Alibaba's plan to push its data center capacity past 20 gigawatts by 2032.
If you own Nvidia through an index fund, or you just want to know who is really coming for the most valuable chipmaker on earth, this is the AI chip story that matters right now.
All prices and share figures are dated and were current at the time of recording.
