(Business Jokes from the World) A certain country placed an order with the condition that the defect rate (yield) be limited to one defective item per 1,000 units.
• U.S. factory asked, “Please double the delivery time.”
• Chinese factory said, “We’ll lower the price, so please allow us to have 10 defective items out of 1,000.”
• Japanese factory said, “We’ve produced 999 perfect products. We’d like to make the remaining one, but we’re having trouble because the design blueprints for defective products haven’t arrived yet.”
• S.Korean factory said, “Our company has surpassed Japan’s technological capabilities. We were the first in the world to develop the ‘design blueprints for defective products’ that Japan cannot produce.”
Would be nice to see ASML monopoly go bye-bye. It was made by conglomerating international firms into a monolith, which should never have been allowed to happen in the first place.
According to he latest data from ASML...it fire offs (3) blasts of EUV per tin droplet. More power, more thru-put, more efficiency, and more production.
With only one company controlling the printing of Chips, the whole world is dependent on them. That creates a massive geopolitical and economic single point of failure. I hope that Cannon and others are successful in producing competitors to ASML.
The low electrical use of the Canon process, about 0.1 MW, is used as a selling point. However, even the 1 MW used by ASML machines is not a major cost driver. This is less than the typical off-peak power consumption of 1000 homes, or a fraction of the power of an electric railway locomotive. A single wind turbine typically generates several MW of power, and data centers can draw hundreds of MW.
It's good if ASML is not the only one in the world who makes chip machines. Still, the machines in the video are not a threat to ASML's machines at all.
The chip industry concentrated to a 2 tier monopoly between ASML and TSMC while the market continued to expand in size and criticality. This is always not a steady state, technology that becomes routine will always spread. The flowering in choices is natural. The writing on the wall is clear but also resonates for the other monopoly of NVIDIA and its CUDA.
A worldwide monopoly is bad news. In a few years it will be split three ways, because China is getting in on the act as well, despite (or because of) US sanctions.
With the resolution achieved by Canon's nanoimprint technology—capable of forming circuit patterns with a minimum linewidth of 14 nm—a replica mask can be used for approximately 2,000 wafers. These nanoimprint replica masks are themselves produced from a master using nanoimprint lithography; the master is created primarily by using an electron beam (EB) writing system to directly pattern the circuit design at actual size (1:1 scale).
