Shoutout from a former Westrail Mech Fitter. Props to all the drivers and crews that kept/keep our trains moving.

The narration says in shock that daytime temperatures on the Nullarbor can be over 40 degrees. No shit Sherlock it's called Summer.

So many inaccuracies in the Australian side, I should have had pen and paper to write them all down.
1. Relay working had commenced in the South Australian outback well before the Transcontinental line commenced construction in 1912 between Port Augusta and Kalgoorlie. Relay working was developed to keep livestock trains moving.
2. The iron ore trains in the Pilbara, never had Relay Vans on their trains. So reasonably irrelevant.
3. Relay Vans have individual bedrooms, no bunk system.
4. Relay Vans don't have laundering facilities in them, no washing machine or dryer.
5. Cook is a change over place for PN operations across the Nullarbor. The other two operators (Aurizon and SCT) run Relay working through Cook.

When working relay trains, when we get to our destination,  after the first 12 hours, we're being paid from then continuously until we get home and sign off.
Relay working is also used North - South between Adelaide and Darwin,  and also on some shorter routes.
Resting/sleeping time in a Relay Van is paid.

PN crews change at a small depot with crew barracks called Cook. Cook is situated 1,138 kilometres from Adelaide and 1,523 kilometres from Perth.

Crews can stop in the US because you're never more than a few hours from a sizeable town but 1600km of nothing across the Nullabor plain you need relief crews who can catch sleep. Australia is around the same size as the lower 48 states, however we have a population of 27-28million compared to the 330million or so in the US. There are enormous expanses within Australia where you won't find a single person!

A somewhat similar system was used in Britain for long distance express passenger trains, in the days of steam.  The tender had a narrow passage down one side which allowed crew change with a crew in the leading carriage.  Some of these tenders have been preserved.

Yes the Nullarbor is like traveling across New Mexico, Arizona and into the real California LA Basin. When the only 1 system of large Aquafier and Pumping Systems that brought Water from the Colorado River keep a few small LA.Basin metro areas above a early living Desert! That is when the Government and Unions out West like back East worked out the 12 on duty and 10 off. But the Australian version paid You for On-Duty and Off-Duty Consecutively. Like Trucking the Australian version would work out great for our Railroad and Trucking Transportation System Greatly!

A lot of the old railroad contracts didn't go. The unions that started with say the L&N or Pierre Marquette still exist. They require changes.
