15 Lost Dutch Trucking Legends That Disappeared From The Roads
There was a time when you could recognize a Dutch haulier before you could even read the name on the cab. From the 1960s through the 1990s, distinctive DAFs, Scanias and Volvos carried the colours of family-run transport companies across the Netherlands and deep into Europe. Then came mergers, takeovers, rebrands and bankruptcies — and many of those familiar names disappeared.
In this nostalgic countdown, we revisit 15 lost names from Dutch trucking history — from regional family hauliers to companies whose trucks were once seen on motorways across Europe.
We remember Van Gend & Loos, whose transport history stretched back to the horse-drawn era before its familiar road fleet eventually became part of DHL. We revisit the international fleets of Van Uden, the cross-border story of Interlimburg, and the familiar white, orange and blue trucks associated with Jan de Rijk.
We also look back at Frans Maas, whose distinctive fleet became closely associated with Venlo before the company was acquired by DSV in 2006, and the changing PTT/TNT road-freight identity that generations of Dutch drivers remember.
Finally, we remember Rynart Transport — founded in 1958 and famous for extraordinary international journeys, including routes toward the Middle East during the golden age of long-distance European trucking.
These weren't simply company names. Their liveries, depots and trucks became part of Dutch road culture — and for many former drivers, seeing those old colours brings back an entire era of trucking.

Van Gend en Loos war nicht nur einen Fernfahrer, aber erledigte auch Botendiensten bis an den Haustür, wie heute UPS, DHL, PostNL, DPD usw. Etwas was zu erkennen ist an manche gezeigte Kleintransporter.
Bereits 1928 wurde Van Gend en Loos durch den Niederländische Spoorwegen (NS) aufgekauft, aber in 1986 verscherbelt an Nedlloyd.
Nedlloyd verkaufte Van Gend en Loos 1999 weiter an die Deutsche Bundespost und DB bracht sie unter bei DHL.
Und Frans Maas verschwand schon früher aus dem Niederländisches Register denn die gesamte Flotte wurde übergebucht nach Polen, damt die LKWs von deren niedrigere Straßensteuer und Mehrwertsteuer profitieren konnte. Sie fuhren also nur noch mit polnische Kennzeichen.
Und PTT verschwand nicht nur von den Straßen, sie veschwand auch von den eiserne Bahnen, denn es fuhren und fahren keine Postzüge mehr.
Manche Wagons sind zu sehen in das NSM in Utrecht.
Er sagt Usterhaut es sollte aber sein OOsterhaut, denn man schreibt Oosterhout.
Auch sagt er "Van Gent en Lus", auch hier bleibt eine doppel O in der Sprache OO, also "Van Gend en lOOs".
Kulwiek sagt er, aber er muß sagen kOOlwEIk
Außerdem fuhren die Speditionen nicht nur in Holland oder in Holland gefestigd, aber durch ganz Niederlanden. Dazu liegen manche Orten nicht in Holland, aber in andere Provinzen.
