Why not hold the grips with carpenters double sided tape. I hold the frames of small clocks for drilling with it. It might make life easier for you

But, which measurement STANDARD?

Because Britain basically launched the Industrial Revolution, THEY set the trend in precision measurement. The metrology gear kept getting better, the machines became more stable and repeatable.

But the Swiss were shaping up as the masters of miniature engineering and thus their VERY early Thury thread system became the clock-makers standard and they were METRIC derived. Thury threads were, in turn, the basis for the Brit "Imperial" BA (British Association" thread that is STILL  in use in miniature engineering circles , and similar. "O" (zero) BA has a pitch of EXACTLY one millimetre. It is essentially M6 coarse but with 47.5 degree "form" and radiused roots and crests. Each successive smaller size was scaled to o.9 x the size of the previous thread, all the way down to ludicrously fine sizes.

Then, there was the "Enfield Inch".

This came to international notoriety just after the Lithgow Small Arms Factory sent its first test products to Enfield for "scrutiny". Then, the fun started.. The Enfield gauging showed up weird errors in dimensions, yet the complete rifles worked well, despite not being fully interchangeable on some components.

Enter the USA. The ENTIRE Lithgow plant, machinery, tooling, metrology etc, had been built as a complete kit by Pratt and Whitney in the US. THEY used the "Pratt and Whitney Inch" and had done for decades.

The "Boffins" generated a big graph showing the "divergence of the two measuring systems. ALL but one threaded component on a No1 Mk 3 Lee Enfield has "Bastard" threads; "Enfield Specials", that dated back to sometime before the 1853 Enfield muzzle-loader. 26 and two thirds threads per inch? TWO of them. The ONLY "common" thread was the huge cheese-head screw that retains the butt; 7/16 Whitworth. This use of oddball threads carried over to the P-13 / P-14 / M-17 series. Has anyone checked a Remington Model 30 to see if the "bastard" threads carried over from its predecessors?

Any gun-plumber familiar with bolt-action military rifles from the 1880s and onward will be aware of the abundance of IMPERIAL breech threads of various forms and pitched. An absolute boon to the "sporterizing" industry in the US, Canada, Oz, etc.

Mauser 98? 12 TPI, 55degree, Whitworth-form breech thread, All the various screws like the front and rear trigger-guard screws have Imperial pitches. .Arisaka Type 30 and 38? Ditto (Type 99s are definitely all metric. The British machine makers supplied machines, tooling and metrology to Mauser, Arisaka, and Mosin Nagant manufacturers, as a start.

Thank you for championing the cause of conservation.  I recently bought a Lee Navy that was owned by a "patina" freak and when I removed it from the wood, there were quarter sized flakes of rust under the handguard. It was far too gone to safely fire, and I don't collect wall hangers. Now I am gonna be forced to take a significant loss on the rifle because I won't misrepresent what it is. The scary part is, if you look down the bore, the rifling looks brand new. My guess is it spent years in a ship's armory and was never used, but the salt air took its toll under the wood.

If the antique arms industry as we know it is going to survive, the entire culture is going to be forced to change. Otherwise, our grandkids will never know what it's like to fire a milsurp. I learned my lesson, if a seller says the word "patina" I walk away from the deal.

My friend who works on cars would have a fit seeing you using those blue shop towels like that. He tears each one into like 3 sections and uses them until they turn black and shred to pieces. I once blew my nose on one of them and when he saw this I thought he was going to have a coronary. He treats them like they are the most precious commodity in his entire shop.

In the diesel industry they are shoulder bolts. Also used in commercial locks alot.
A lot of these can be replaced with a sleeve over the screw,that tightens against each end of the sleeve!

Using the tailstock is a great way to keep the die straight. Just butt the dieholder up against it.
