2026 update: I'm still receiving loads of comments from people saying it isn't Latin in this, but it is Latin. The chances of random gibberish forming exact sentences in another language are next to none 😉 https://www.tumblr.com/tending-the-hearth/787191545095946240/in-your-idol-the-intro-has-two-specific-parts

For those who don't know, the Dies Irae has been used for ages as the musical motif for death on both the stage and in films. It's usually just the first four notes telling us someone is about to die. Everyone has heard these notes far more than they know.

@nickatwell3041 1 year ago

In addition to the Latin at the beginning there is a choir chanting “Pray For Me Now”. It just adds to the unsettling/dread feeling of the song.

This is the best villain music in an animated movie in such a long time

@preciousonejewel 1 year ago

you are the only person reacting to this song that knew the beginning was latin and could understand it...makes the reaction so much cooler!

In Korean, "saja" (사자) has two primary meanings: it can mean "lion" (a symbol of power and courage) or, in the context of the term jeoseung saja (저승사자), it can mean "messenger," specifically a messenger of death, referring to the traditional Korean equivalent of the grim reaper who guides souls to the afterlife

the fact that you are listening to the full version is awesome. far too many people only react to the short version.

The second line in Latin was "Vos solve in favilla" which translates to "will dissolve you into ashes".

@TyphinHoofbun 1 year ago

I'm surprised this wasn't touched on, 'cause it was one of the first things that jumped out at me. But in the final chorus, the lines change. (Also, each time the lead singer goes "Preachin' to the choir", the response is louder with more voices, indicating getting more and more people entranced.)
"Gimme your desire, I can be the star you rely on" -> "Gimme your desire, Once we set your world on fire"
"Don't you know I'm here to save you?" -> "No one is coming to save you!"
"I'm all you need, I'mma be your idol" -> "You're down on your knees, I'mma be your idol"

Underneath the latin, that sound is sharp chanting: "Pray. For. Me. Now."

OMG THE LATIN IS SUCH A FLEX

Fun fact: Ejae who is the singing voice of Rumi, also wrote this song and she sang the demo as well. I really wanna hear her demo, I hope someday they will release it.

I feel like those background chants are the real stars of this song. Adds so much "epicness" to the chorus!

It’s not about demonic themes in the music industry, but about the reality of the K-pop industry in particular. The movie calls them pop stars, which is true, but in the real world they’re referred to as K-pop IDOLS.
This song shows the dark side of the relationship of fans and K-pop artists. Some K-pop fans take their fandom waaaay too far. The fans can be so obsessed they basically worship them, and some don’t even realize it.
“Your obsession feeds our connection…give me all your attention”, “You’re down on your knees, I’ma be your idol”.

Just the average parent here.

But I didn’t even realize there was a “full” version video vs what everyone was reacting to 😂

I had a feeling I liked this song more during the car rides, just wasn’t sure why til now

While other people have touched on the meaning of 'Saja Boys' in the comments, I don't think anyone has mentioned they're all dressed up as the Korean version of the Grim Reaper.

@patty4349 1 year ago (edited)

One of the best things about the Saja Boys' songs is the way they both have 2 meanings. The obvious "love song" meaning and the second, darker meaning revealing their mission.

The creator Maggie Kang said she did a lot of research on korean demonology and mythology for the movie and it really shows and fits somehow with all the kpop culture, pop culture, music and pretty much everything else.

13:39 I’ve studied rap as literature, it’s very adjacent to poetry with structured rhyme schemes and meter. Kpop usually has a rap section in songs, sometimes even ballads, I always appreciate the way it interacts with the melody.
