The Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP) crisis has become an epidemic in North America. Nowhere as much as Oklahoma, whose history as Indian Territory has left a lasting impression on the state's Native community.

Oklahoma currently has the most recorded missing persons of any state in America. The indigenous population are 3 times more likely to go missing than others. Murder is one of the leading causes of death amongst the women and men.

The numbers obscure a larger problem and is one of the reasons it's hard to determine just how massive this crisis is. Less than half of violent victimizations against AI/AN women are ever reported to police. A retroactive study found In 2016 only 2% of reported missing AI/AN women cases made it to NAMUS.
