My mom was one of those Women.

This is possibly my favorite video you’ve done. It’s thought provoking and genuinely explores the concept of what connection really means. You honor their customs and the people who continue to follow those customs so well. You truly are such a wonderful voice for so many things in China. Never an agenda other than exploring and celebrating the people, customs, food, and experiences they offer. Very well done!

This made me cry. You can tell how earnest they are about clearing up misconceptions and how much they value their culture. What a great video.

The last woman being interviewed really amazed me. She is so confident, articulate and even philosophical in her speaking. It takes a true educated and cultured Chinese woman to express themselves that well.

In a world where people are so worried about divorce because what will happen to the kids and how can they support themselves alone, it’s surprisingly wonderful to hear there are places in the world where those problems have answers and these people have support.

Wouldn’t it be amazing to be surrounded by a loving family knowing that all the hard work and success would stay within the family framework and strengthen it. If you divorce you still have a roof over your head and family support and the children’s lives are not disrupted and they still see their Dads all the time. There would be far more security for everyone

most people don't realise that our conceptions of marriage, family units, and patriarchy are all just social norms - nothing makes it "right" other than it being what we were brought up in. very refreshing to see other ways of living represented (especially one that emphasises care and connection over money and violence), and i hope the culture doesn't disappear with modernisation.

what a beautiful response from the woman at the end. wanting to share and exchange cultures and learn from each other is a valuable thing that I wish was a universal belief

There are a few traditional cultures where relationships are entered a bit more freely by both parties (not family determined arranged marriages) and it’s interesting that outsiders always make the suggestion that people in those cultures sleep around. Like can it not be possible that people are pretty loyal just because they choose to be and like their partner?

I have long heard of the Mosuo people, who are a matrilineal society. Large families are formed solely through female lineage. A man and his children are never considered parts of the same family. A child is primarily regarded as having only a mother and a visiting father from a different family. A man works to support his sister's children. A woman may have children with different men but still considers them all one family.

One of the happiest , more connected times in my life was when I lived on some land with no electricity, running water, we grew our food, cooked and canned on a fire, slept in a tipi or van, and built a house for the land owner with hand tools.  We asked the eldest peope in the small town how to use the tools, and some things they learned as children living the way we were choosing to.  It made them feel valued and it really helped us.  Everyone took turns doing the necessary chores, like hauling water, smoking the bee hives and collecting honey,  skimming the oils,( from the clay ), off the pond surface, picking bugs off the vegetble plants as we didn't use sprays, grinding wheat for bread, etc.  No TV,  cell phones and computers weren't invented yet, no radio.  We entertained ourselves. We went to town to seed coop meetings where we did pot luck dinner with others living as we were, decided what seed's to order in bulk, then watched a movie, or did our own talent show or sang as a group.  
That slower lifestyle gave people time to think, socialize  and to appreciate.  I think that is what a slower pace, where people depend on each other, does.  Whether it's a family group, or  friends.
Later in life, one of my most precious friendships took place via computer and cell phone and we never met each other in person, but we got very deep in our conversations and connection, so I also think it depends what each person values, and is willing to invest(time, truthfulness, emotion) as much as the method  you use to  communicate.

I have to say that this is probably the best short video on the Mosuo people i have ever seen because it really dispel all the misconceptions about the Mosuo culture and their practises. Many people have this sensationalised Hollywood version of the Mosuo culture especially of the women of being promiscuous. Thank you Blondie for the video as we now know and understand the real Mosuo culture. By the way, the last woman you interview truly reflects the beauty of the Mosuo culture which have been misunderstood for a long time (even by the other ethnic Chinese tribes within China!)

The respect and understanding with which you explain a culture so very different from anything else is an honor to witness! This video feels like a documentary and I just wished there was more of it for me to watch ❤

The loneliness epidemic is a real thing. The ubiquity of smartphones and social media changed the entire social paradigm. Digital connectivity has usurped in-person interaction in modernity, especially in dense, urban environments where people are physically closer than they've ever been but still very much socially disconnected. Perhaps there's something to be said about the Amish lifestyle.
