Worth noting that ONE of the reasons the danger was so highly touted in the early years of post-WWII racing was because of WWII. The racers of the 50's were in WWII, or lived through it at least, and as a result, they'd have had a somewhat different view of "danger". Quite a few of those early F1 drivers were looking to recreate the life & death "thrill" they got in combat in their racecars. The danger actually WAS a feature for them - because they'd spent their formative years constantly in mortal danger in combat.
as a race engineer, i can say there are tons of women in amateur racing, like so much so that my mother who attended her first race in the pits and has no clue about racing said "wow there are a lot of girls"
I had a dream of an alternative reality where coke was legal and big columbian dominated liverly in every single sport on the planet. From motor to chess. It was glorious.
I'm never going to stop thinking your channel is like a "Youtubified" version of that early 2000s Gran Turismo vibe, it's a perfect mix of chill, interesting, and wheel knowledge 😭
Love how he just gives us a straightforward and simple answer in the first 10 seconds of the video and leaves the choice to dive deeper up to us lmao goated channel
Just want to shout out A. Lia Block for being awesome in Rally (and even did a little bit of single seat stuff) and B. Michelle Mouton again because I don't think people realize that she has done a lot of stuff for spectator safety in the modern day
Don't forget about Janet Guthrie, first woman to qualify for the Indy 500 in 1977, and paved the way for many more women in the greatest spectacle in racing. 🎉
wanted to add that japan has largely kept the grid girls in their own racing events. There they call them "Race Queens" or something like that. Needless to say that it's a sort of branch from the gravure and idol world of modeling. The biggest difference comes from the fact that they're not directly tied to sponsors and instead are more local to the racing team itself.
15:00 For some reason, seeing the grid girls being dressed in the colours and logos of the German post service (Deutsche Post), i.e. cosplaying as German postmen, seems weirdly hilarious to me.
5 minutes into this video I lowkey thought “racing in itself IS A VICE… so it kinda makes sense?” So yea I mean according to the definition we’re going by, racing (more specifically non-legal racing) or just spirited driving is technically not good… but who’s gonna stop me from finding a line on my local backroad 🤷🏾♂️
I feel like I didn't just watch a 'yOuTuBe ViDeO eSsAy', I felt like I just asked bro to elaborate some some point he was making. Hold onto that my man, it's refreshing.
