No tell of a lie, NiGHTS is my favourite game ever. It planted the seed in my 11yr old brain that games could be art, even if I couldn’t articulate it.
The theme of not giving up tied perfectly with its gameplay because at first, I didn’t know what I was doing and put it down to play Sega Rally instead. But I came back, learned, got better and beat it and was floored by the ending. It really moved me and to this day still does.
I can’t add more to what you wonderfully articulated in this video about the game and 90’s Sega. Exemplary stuff!
I remember being obsessed with the Nights pinball machine in Sonic Adventure as a kid. I was so excited when I realized Nights was its own game. I definitely found it really difficult as a kid and couldn’t make it very far but definitely need to give Nights another go.
Definitely a magical little game. It always eluded me as a kid to see Nights make cameos in so many Sonic games, but I never got to play it til it was released digitally on the Xbox 360, and I liked it enough to beat it and get all the achievements for it. I recently even went as far as getting a Saturn, a 3D pad, and a copy of both Nights and Christmas Nights off of eBay and I love it. The Saturn was before my time, but it's such a charming console. It's a shame it didn't sell well. I miss the Sega from the 90s and 00s so much, man.
NiGHTs is just one of those games that looks simple on the surface, but the more you dig, the more you find. It's such a great game and one that I grew up with, and I hope Sega returns to the franchise in some capacity
Yet another incredible Nights into dreams retrospective to watch to make my day brighter. Every time one of these is manifested into existence, the joy is Nigjts continues to spread with dream like magic ✨
14:30 NiGHTS is a nightmaren, one of the lackeys of the final boss (forgot his name). I believe one underrated aspect of the character of NiGHTS is this potential for real danger, which is reflected in the characters' ambiguous design: he/she was born to do evil and harm those children, but he/she chose o help them instead. Not out of some sense of moral code, but simply because he/she wanted to.
Sonic and NiGHTS are basically the same character, and I like to believe this evil dormant side of NiGHTS is how Sonic Team reinterpreted the early 90's edge they gave to Sonic.
Rewind to roughly 1998. I had read about this game in a gaming magazine. Luck had it there was a copy of Nights sitting on a shelf at a small local multimedia store, curiously it was also the only (last?) Sega Saturn game there. Everything else was N64, PS1, and GB. I remember the store clerk actually phoned his superior because there was no price tag, so I got it for cheap with some pocket money. Thing is, I didn't have a Saturn though I always wanted one. My folks got me a PS1 the year before because that was the choice, besides the N64. I finally got a Saturn from a friend of a friend, he looked at me like I was deranged for wanting the system. "But you have a PS1, right? Why don't you get a N64?" Clearly he didn't have a good time with it. I did. My Saturn games collection eventually got bigger than my PS1 collection.
Thank you so much for this. Greatest game ever. I wish more people had played it, but perhaps it's obscurity is what made it magical. I was the only person in my year group to stick with Sega and the Saturn-- to me this game was my reward.
27:20 - 27:28 when you started going through all of those games I immediately thought of how FIGHTERS MEGAMiX threw Daytona, Virtua Cop in with the Virtua Fighter x Fighting Vipers crew. I wish NiGHTS was included...but if that happened, the character would of most likely been OP
Great video. NiGHTS is one of my favourite games of all time. I too picked up my Saturn bundle from Dixons in 96, though late July after I'd spent the school holidays doing cleaning jobs to save up for it!
