Everyone thinks Muay Thai is all about getting punched and kicked. I did too… until my coach made me spend 30 minutes in the clinch.
Turns out getting hit wasn’t the hardest part after all.
With less than 3 weeks until my first Muay Thai fight, my coach put me through one of the toughest sessions of my fight camp: 30 minutes of nonstop Muay Thai clinch training before we even started sparring.
In this episode you’ll see what real Muay Thai clinching is like, why fighters spend so much time practising it, how exhausting it really is, and why coaches often use it before hard sparring sessions.
I also secretly gave myself three goals before training without telling my coach:
🥊 Don’t back down
🥊 Sweep my coach once
🥊 Land a clean punch to the face
Did I manage any of them?
Along the way you’ll also learn:
Why the Muay Thai clinch is so important
Two effective clinch sweeps
How elite fighters use the clinch to control opponents
Why clinching can be more exhausting than striking
My coach’s honest assessment of my progress before my first fight
This channel follows my journey as a 45-year-old martial arts enthusiast trying to become a better fighter through Muay Thai, BJJ, wrestling and MMA challenges. If you’re learning martial arts, preparing for your first fight, or just curious what real training is like, you’re in the right place.
